About this session
A project fails. A proposal is rejected.
An opportunity disappears. A mistake has consequences.
A result does not match the effort that went into it. Setbacks are part of working life, but the period immediately afterward often determines whether the experience becomes useful learning or a much bigger loss of confidence.
This session focuses on that period after something has gone wrong.
Participants learn how to stabilize the first reaction before making unnecessary decisions, separate the actual consequences from the meaning they are attaching to the event and decide what kind of problem they now have: something to fix, something to learn from, something to repair or something that simply needs time.
Participants then run a practical setback debrief, identify what was genuinely knowable at the time and extract the lessons worth carrying forward. The final part focuses on rebuilding confidence through manageable action, targeted support and a personal setback-response plan.
The objective is not to make disappointment disappear quickly. It is to recover without allowing one difficult event to define everything that happens next.

What’s covered
Stabilize Before You Interpret
Every length- Name what actually happenedParticipants describe the setback in one or two factual sentences before explaining what they think it means.
- Let the first reaction be informationParticipants identify the immediate disappointment, embarrassment, anger or frustration without treating that feeling as a decision.
- Separate impact from identityParticipants map the real consequences of what happened—lost time, missed revenue, damaged trust, another attempt required—then compare them with identity conclusions such as “I am a failure.” The exercise keeps legitimate impact visible without turning the event into a verdict on the whole person.
- Use a first-24-hours responseParticipants build a short protocol for the period immediately after a difficult outcome.
Turn the Setback Into Useful Information
90 minutes and longer- Sort what you can still changeParticipants divide the situation into what can still be corrected, what needs another conversation, what depends on someone else and what cannot now be undone.
- Debrief without hindsight perfectionParticipants compare what they knew when the original decision was made with what is obvious only now.
- Extract the lesson worth keepingParticipants reduce the setback into one or two transferable lessons rather than producing an overwhelming list of everything they could have done differently.
- Know when to close the analysisParticipants create a stopping point for reflection by asking whether new thinking is still producing new information.
Rebuild Confidence Through Action
3 hours and longer- Find where the setback changed your behaviorParticipants identify what they are now avoiding, delaying or overcontrolling because of the setback.
- Make the first re-entry small enough to doParticipants design an appropriately sized next step: another conversation, smaller proposal, practice round, revised application or limited decision.
- Use previous recovery as evidenceParticipants identify earlier situations that once felt difficult but eventually became manageable.
- Ask for targeted supportParticipants identify whether they need information, feedback, practical help, perspective or professional support and practice asking for that specific thing.
Build Your Setback Recovery System
Full day only- Know your early warning signsParticipants identify the behaviors that show a setback is becoming bigger than the event itself.
- Build a support map before you need itParticipants map who can provide perspective, technical feedback, practical help, organizational action or professional support.
- Pre-plan your most likely setbacksParticipants identify two or three professional setbacks they are realistically likely to encounter again and decide how they want to respond.
- Move forward without erasing what happenedParticipants decide what should be carried forward as learning, what needs continued repair and what can now be released.
