About this session
Most people experience difficult nights from time to time. A sleep disorder is different: symptoms may persist, repeatedly interfere with sleep or cause significant daytime problems despite having enough opportunity to rest.
Common examples include insomnia, sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, circadian-rhythm disorders and conditions that cause excessive daytime sleepiness.
This session begins with the practical questions employees are most likely to have: What pattern am I experiencing? What should I record?
What can I manage myself? When should I stop relying on general sleep tips and speak to a healthcare professional?
Participants learn how to describe symptoms clearly, reduce the effect on working days and prepare for an appropriate assessment.
The session does not encourage self-diagnosis. Instead, participants learn to distinguish broad patterns, understand the purpose of sleep diaries and sleep studies, and recognize why different disorders require different forms of assessment and treatment.

Every length- Start with the pattern, not the labelParticipants identify whether their main difficulty involves falling asleep, staying asleep, waking too early, unusual sensations, breathing disruption or overwhelming daytime sleepiness.
- Build a useful sleep recordParticipants create a simple record covering sleep opportunity, bedtime, estimated sleep, waking, daytime tiredness, naps, medication, caffeine and relevant symptoms.
- Manage the working day safelyParticipants identify practical ways to reduce the impact of poor sleep while seeking support, including prioritizing demanding tasks, taking appropriate breaks, planning transport and avoiding safety-critical activity when severely sleepy.
- Know when general sleep tips are not enoughParticipants consider persistent insomnia, loud snoring, gasping, witnessed pauses in breathing, uncontrollable sleepiness, unusual nighttime behaviors and repeated uncomfortable leg sensations as reasons to seek appropriate assessment.
