About this session
Employee retention is rarely one problem with one solution.
A business may be losing early-career employees during the first year, experienced specialists after several years, people from one difficult-to-staff location, or strong internal candidates because advancement is easier elsewhere.
Those patterns require different questions and potentially different responses.
Retention Intelligence begins by establishing what is actually happening. Participants distinguish voluntary exits, involuntary exits, retirement, internal moves, contract endings, and other forms of workforce movement and decide which patterns matter to the business.
They examine rates alongside headcount, tenure, role, location, movement, hiring conditions, and other relevant context so a single headline turnover percentage does not become the entire diagnosis.
The next challenge is understanding why.
Participants bring together appropriate evidence from stay conversations, exit feedback, employee listening, manager insight, workload and scheduling information, career movement, reward data, operational conditions, and labor-market context.
They learn to distinguish a recurring pattern from an anecdote and an association from a demonstrated cause.
Finally, participants translate the diagnosis into strategy.
Different retention problems may require different responses: manager action, career pathways, workload redesign, pay review, flexibility, development, job design, recognition, onboarding improvements, workplace conditions, or another intervention.
The goal is not to teach every retention lever in depth. It is to determine which lever fits which diagnosed problem, prioritize action, and monitor whether the targeted response changes the pattern.

What’s covered
Find the Retention Problem That Actually Matters
Every length- Define what counts as the retention problemParticipants distinguish voluntary exits, involuntary exits, internal moves, retirements, end-of-contract departures, and other forms of workforce movement before treating them as one turnover number.
- Look beyond the headline turnover rateAn organization-wide percentage can conceal very different experiences underneath it.
- Distinguish unwanted loss from healthy movementNot every departure has the same consequence.
- Build the retention questionParticipants convert a broad concern such as 'our turnover is too high' into a specific analytical question describing the population, period, pattern, and business consequence.
Build the Retention Evidence & Diagnose Why
90 minutes and longer- Combine multiple sources of evidenceParticipants identify relevant sources such as turnover and tenure data, exit surveys, exit interviews, stay conversations, employee listening, internal mobility, absence patterns, reward information, scheduling or workload evidence, manager observations, and labor-market context.
- Design better stay & exit questionsParticipants develop questions that explore the employee's experience, changing expectations, reasons for staying, conditions that make work harder, development and career opportunities, manager support, workload, recognition, flexibility, and other relevant factors.
- Separate pattern from assumptionParticipants compare recurring themes across evidence sources and identify where the same issue appears in several forms.
- Look for the condition beneath the labelBroad labels such as 'manager,' 'pay,' 'career growth,' or 'culture' are starting points rather than complete diagnoses.
Turn the Diagnosis Into Targeted Retention Action
3 hours and longer- Match the response to the diagnosed conditionParticipants connect each priority retention condition with the organizational lever most capable of influencing it.
- Build different strategies for different populationsThe same intervention does not need to be applied to the entire workforce.
- Prioritize by impact, feasibility & evidenceParticipants compare potential interventions according to the significance of the retention problem, confidence in the diagnosis, number of employees affected, likely influence, implementation feasibility, cost or effort, and dependencies.
- Connect retention action with the specialist leversParticipants identify when the diagnosis points toward deeper capability available elsewhere in the Workbliss catalog, such as manager behavior, belonging, development, engagement, onboarding, or employee listening.
Measure, Govern & Continuously Improve Retention Strategy
Full day only- Define what success would actually changeParticipants identify the workforce movement or experience pattern the intervention is intended to influence and define appropriate leading and lagging evidence.
- Interpret retention metrics with contextParticipants review counts, rates, tenure, internal movement, replacement patterns, and other relevant measures alongside changes in hiring volume, reorganizations, labor-market conditions, seasonal work, or population size.
- Create ownership & action governanceParticipants clarify who owns the overall retention problem, who owns each intervention, who can make policy or resource decisions, and who is responsible for reviewing employee-listening evidence.
- Review the retention portfolioParticipants establish a review rhythm for examining whether diagnosed conditions are changing and whether interventions should continue, adapt, scale, stop, or undergo deeper investigation.
