About this session

The workforce is changing, but simplistic generational labels can create more confusion than insight. Two employees born in the same decade may differ enormously in career stage, responsibilities, values, working preferences and expectations.

At the same time, genuine structural changes are reshaping work for everyone: digital-first experiences, hybrid work, AI, faster skill cycles, new career pathways and greater visibility into what other employers offer.

Next-generation engagement therefore requires more than creating a 'Gen Z strategy'. Organizations need to understand which expectations are genuinely changing, which employee needs remain enduring and where different workforce populations experience the organization differently.

Participants examine the emerging employee experience through growth, flexibility, transparency, purpose, recognition, belonging, technology, employee voice and manager relationships.

They then learn to redesign engagement practices around moments that matter, create more adaptable employee journeys, experiment with new approaches and use workforce evidence to determine what actually works.

The aim is an engagement system capable of evolving with the workforce rather than chasing every new workplace trend.

What’s covered

Understand the Workforce That Is Actually Emerging

Every length
  • Move beyond generational stereotypesGenerational labels can provide useful historical context, but they become dangerous when they are used to predict an individual employee's motivation, capability or behavior.
  • Separate generation, life stage & period effectsAn employee early in their career may value rapid learning partly because they are early in their career, not simply because they belong to a particular generation.
  • Identify the structural shifts in workDigital work, hybrid environments, AI, changing skill requirements, greater access to external career information and less linear career paths are altering how employees experience organizations.
  • Understand expectations through evidenceThe strongest engagement strategy combines external workforce insight with internal employee listening, behavioral evidence and business context.

Redesign the Employee Value Experience for a Changing Workforce

90 minutes and longer
  • Make growth more visibleDevelopment does not begin and end with promotion.
  • Build flexibility around real workFlexibility can include location, scheduling, autonomy, ways of collaborating and how work is organized.
  • Make purpose concreteBroad corporate purpose statements have limited value when employees cannot see how their own work contributes to a meaningful customer, colleague, community or organizational outcome.
  • Modernise recognition & progressRecognition is stronger when employees understand what contribution is being recognized and receive it close enough to the work for the connection to remain meaningful.

Build Connection, Voice & Trust in Digital-First Work

3 hours and longer
  • Design the digital employee experienceEmployees encounter the organization through systems as well as people.
  • Create employee voice with consequencesEmployee voice loses credibility when organizations repeatedly collect opinions without explaining what was heard or what will happen next.
  • Maintain human connection as technology expandsAI and digital tools can remove friction, personalize access and support employees at scale, but technology cannot automatically replace every conversation, relationship or judgment that gives work its human context.
  • Build transparency without promising perfect certaintyEmployees often become frustrated not simply because they dislike a decision, but because the reasoning, process or next step is unclear.

Build the Next-Generation Engagement Operating Model

Full day only
  • Design for different employee journeysEmployees may join, develop and progress through the organization in increasingly different ways.
  • Equip managers for the new employee contractEmployees experience many organizational promises through their direct manager: flexibility, feedback, development, workload, recognition, voice and trust.
  • Experiment before scalingWorkforce trends can encourage organizations to implement fashionable programs before knowing whether employees need them or whether they solve the underlying problem.
  • Build an engagement system that keeps learningNext-generation engagement cannot be a one-time redesign because technology, workforce expectations and organizational needs will continue changing.
