About this session
Hong Kong's employee tax system works differently from PAYE-style systems where income tax is routinely deducted from every paycheck. Employers report remuneration, but employees generally settle their own Salaries Tax after the Inland Revenue Department assesses the return.
A tax demand can also include provisional tax for another year of assessment, which means the first significant Hong Kong tax bill can be larger and arrive later than a new employee expects.
This session turns that system into a practical year-round framework.
Participants learn how the 1 April to 31 March year of assessment, Salaries Tax, progressive and standard-rate calculations, allowances, deductions, employer-reported income, and the final assessment fit together.
They also learn why MPF deductions from payroll are not the same thing as Salaries Tax and how to prepare financially for tax instalments shown on the demand note.
The later modules examine Hong Kong's strict employment-expense rules, self-education, domestic rent, home-loan interest, employer-provided housing, MPF and TVC tax boundaries, married-taxpayer questions, Personal Assessment, Property Tax, and more complex issues such as employee equity, business income, investment classification, and cross-border work.
Participants finish with a Hong Kong Tax Planning Calendar covering evidence, return filing, final and provisional tax, payment readiness, and the points at which specialist support is required.

What’s covered
Understand Your Hong Kong Salaries Tax Position
Every length- Understand who reports the income — and who pays the taxParticipants learn why employer remuneration reporting and personal Salaries Tax payment are separate responsibilities in Hong Kong.
- Connect the year of assessment, return & tax computationParticipants map the 1 April to 31 March year of assessment, Tax Return.
- Distinguish final tax from provisional taxParticipants learn why a demand note can include tax for the completed year plus provisional Salaries Tax toward another year of assessment and why this advance-payment mechanism should not be confused with being taxed twice on the same income.
- Build tax-payment readiness around the demand noteParticipants learn to locate assessment details, payment amounts, instalments, due dates, and provisional-tax information on a supplied demand note and build a personal review calendar.
Build Your Allowance, Deduction & Tax Evidence System
90 minutes and longer- Distinguish allowances, deductions & annual tax reductionsParticipants learn that Hong Kong allowances, statutory deductions, concessionary deductions, and one-off fiscal-year tax reductions affect the calculation in different ways.
- Apply the strict employment-expense test before claiming a costParticipants examine the stringent Hong Kong test for employment outgoings and expenses and learn why private, domestic, capital, ordinary commuting, or merely useful work-related costs are not automatically deductible.
- Understand the specific deduction routes outside the general expense testParticipants distinguish the general employment-expense rule from specific statutory categories such as qualifying self-education, approved charitable donations, domestic rent, home-loan interest, qualifying healthcare / retirement deductions, and other current concessionary deductions.
- Build the evidence while the year of assessment is happeningParticipants create a Hong Kong Tax Evidence System covering employment remuneration, professional expenses, self-education, donations, qualifying rent / mortgage records, MPF / TVC information, eligible insurance or annuity records, and other relevant tax documents.
Understand Employer Benefits, Housing & MPF Tax Interactions
3 hours and longer- Understand employer housing as a taxable employment benefitParticipants learn why employer-provided accommodation or qualifying rent-reimbursement arrangements can create a statutory rental-value benefit under Salaries Tax.
- Recognize other employment benefits that can enter Salaries TaxParticipants identify bonuses, commissions, gratuities, employer-paid tax, education benefits, retirement-scheme payments, share-based employment benefits, and other remuneration as potential Salaries Tax items depending on the facts.
- Distinguish mandatory MPF, ordinary voluntary contributions & TVCParticipants learn why mandatory employee MPF contributions can receive specified tax treatment while ordinary voluntary contributions are not automatically deductible and TVC operates under a specific tax-deduction regime.
- Keep retirement, insurance & tax decisions separateParticipants examine TVC, qualifying annuity, VHIS, and other tax-related financial-product deductions as tax structures rather than product recommendations.
Manage Personal Assessment, Complexity & the Full Tax Cycle
Full day only- Distinguish Salaries Tax, Property Tax & Personal AssessmentParticipants learn that employment income, rental property, and business profits can sit within different Hong Kong tax categories and that eligible individuals may encounter Personal Assessment when several income sources or deductions need to be considered together.
- Recognize investment, business & employee-equity tax boundariesParticipants learn why personal investment holdings, securities trading as a business, sole-proprietor income, employee share options or awards, and property activity can create very different Hong Kong tax questions.
- Recognize cross-border, arrival & departure tax complexityParticipants learn that employer location, employment source, services rendered in Hong Kong, days worked in and outside Hong Kong, foreign tax, arrival, departure, and international mobility can change the tax analysis.
- Close the year with the return, assessment & next-year planParticipants review the Tax Return – Individuals, Individual Tax Portal, assessment / demand note, final and provisional tax, corrections, payment readiness, and official support pathways and build a Hong Kong Tax Planning Calendar for the next year of assessment.
