About this session

Irish employee tax planning begins in payroll but does not end there.

Revenue provides PAYE information through the employee's Tax Credit Certificate and the employer's Revenue Payroll Notification, while Income Tax, USC and PRSI can all appear on the same payslip for different reasons.

Multiple jobs, changes to tax credits, employment expenses, benefits in kind, pension contributions and other income can all affect the wider tax position.

This session turns those moving parts into a practical employee tax system. Participants first understand PAYE, tax credits, rate bands, marginal tax, USC, PRSI, multiple employments, and the annual Revenue review.

They then learn to distinguish tax credits, reliefs and exemptions and examine Flat Rate Expenses, actual employment expenses, remote-working relief, employer reimbursements, and the evidence needed to support legitimate claims.

The later modules examine taxable employer benefits, pension contribution tax relief, the important distinction between ordinary pension tax relief and MyFutureFund's State-top-up model, investment income, DIRT, CGT, rental and other non-PAYE income, and the boundary between PAYE administration and self-assessment.

Participants finish with an Ireland Tax Planning Calendar covering payroll, tax evidence, investments, annual PAYE return review, Statement of Liability, and the points at which specialist support is appropriate.

What’s covered

Understand Your Irish PAYE Tax Position

Every length
  • Connect PAYE, tax credits & rate bands with final annual taxParticipants learn how PAYE withholding, tax credits, standard-rate bands, Tax Credit Certificate information, and Revenue Payroll Notifications connect with annual Income Tax.
  • Distinguish Income Tax, USC & PRSIParticipants learn that Income Tax, Universal Social Charge, and Pay Related Social Insurance are separate payroll deductions with different purposes and rules.
  • Understand multiple jobs & marital assessment without chasing a payroll resultParticipants examine how tax credits and rate bands can be allocated across multiple employments and how joint assessment, separate assessment, and separate treatment can affect married employees or civil partners.
  • Use the annual review to check the whole tax yearParticipants learn why payroll is only one part of the tax picture and how myAccount, the PAYE Income Tax Return, and the Statement of Liability can be used to review the complete year, claim eligible reliefs, declare specified additional income, and identify a refund, underpayment, or balanced outcome.

Build Your Tax Credit, Relief & Employment Expense System

90 minutes and longer
  • Distinguish tax credits, reliefs & exemptionsParticipants learn that tax credits reduce Income Tax after the tax calculation, reliefs can reduce the income on which tax is calculated under their rules, and exemptions can remove specified income from tax where conditions are met.
  • Distinguish Flat Rate Expenses from actual employment expensesParticipants learn why Revenue-agreed Flat Rate Expense allowances apply only to specified employment groups while other employee expenses face a strict eligibility and evidence test.
  • Handle remote work, reimbursements & professional costs carefullyParticipants examine Remote Working Relief, employer remote-work payments, professional costs, business travel, ordinary commuting, and other supplied employee scenarios.
  • Build the evidence while the tax year is happeningParticipants create an Ireland Tax Evidence System covering employment expenses, remote-work records, professional fees, health / rent / education or other current relief documentation, pension contributions, investment records, and relevant Revenue documents.

Understand Workplace Benefits, Pensions & MyFutureFund Tax Interactions

3 hours and longer
  • Understand benefit in kind & employer expenses without treating every benefit the sameParticipants learn that non-cash benefits, employer-paid obligations, and expense reimbursements can receive different Income Tax, USC, and PRSI treatment depending on the benefit and current rules.
  • Understand pension income tax relief without turning it into contribution adviceParticipants learn why qualifying employee contributions to occupational pension schemes, AVCs, PRSAs, and other qualifying arrangements can receive Income Tax relief within current limits.
  • Distinguish pension income tax relief from USC & PRSI treatmentParticipants learn that qualifying pension contributions can reduce Income Tax under current rules while employee pension contributions do not automatically reduce the pay base used for USC or PRSI.
  • Keep MyFutureFund's State top-up separate from ordinary pension tax reliefParticipants learn that MyFutureFund operates under a distinct employee / employer / State contribution model.

Manage Investments, Other Income & the Annual Revenue Review

Full day only
  • Distinguish deposit interest, dividends, capital gains & fund taxParticipants learn why DIRT-treated deposit interest, dividends, direct-share gains, CGT, Irish or foreign investment funds, ETFs, and offshore products can fall under different Irish tax rules.
  • Recognize rental, equity, business & other non-PAYE tax triggersParticipants identify rental income, employee share schemes, freelance or business income, significant additional non-PAYE income, gifts / inheritances, and other items that can move an employee beyond routine PAYE administration.
  • Know when PAYE administration becomes self-assessmentParticipants learn that limited additional income can sometimes be reported through the PAYE annual-return process while larger or specified non-PAYE income can require self-assessment, ROS, Form 11, and potentially preliminary tax.
  • Review the whole year & build the next-year planParticipants review myAccount information, PAYE tax records, eligible credits / reliefs, specified additional income, the PAYE Income Tax Return, Statement of Liability, and unresolved specialist issues and build an Ireland Tax Planning Calendar for the next tax year.
