About this session

Gratitude is sometimes presented as simply 'thinking positive,' but useful gratitude practice is more grounded than that. It involves deliberately noticing what is supportive, meaningful or going reasonably well while still allowing frustration, stress and difficulty to be real.

This session helps participants understand gratitude as an attention practice. When work becomes demanding, attention can naturally become dominated by problems, risks and unfinished tasks.

Participants practice widening that field to include helpful people, progress, resources and moments that may otherwise pass unnoticed.

The session also focuses on expressed gratitude: recognizing other people's contribution in ways that are specific and genuine rather than generic praise.

The final module helps participants create a flexible gratitude routine that can support perspective, relationships and wellbeing without becoming another daily obligation or a way of minimizing legitimate workplace concerns.

What’s covered

Notice What Your Attention Misses

Every length
  • Notice the brain's problem-solving biasParticipants identify how attention naturally gravitates toward problems, risks, unfinished tasks and things that need fixing.
  • Widen the field of attentionParticipants pause and deliberately identify what is also present.
  • Notice small things without dismissing themParticipants practice recognizing modest experiences such as a helpful message, a task completed, a quiet break or an enjoyable conversation without deciding that something must be dramatic before it counts.
  • Look for what helpedParticipants review a demanding situation and identify what helped them get through it, such as another person's support, a skill, a resource or their own persistence.

Practice Realistic Gratitude

90 minutes and longer
  • Be specific about what you appreciateParticipants move beyond broad statements such as 'I am grateful for my job' and identify a specific event, person or experience and what made it meaningful.
  • Notice progress as well as outcomesParticipants identify effort, learning, improvement or movement that might otherwise be ignored because the final goal has not yet been reached.
  • Let gratitude and difficulty coexistParticipants practice holding two truths at once: something can be difficult, unfair or disappointing while another part of the situation remains supportive or valuable.
  • Find a practice that does not feel forcedParticipants test different approaches such as brief reflection, writing one specific thing, sharing appreciation or mentally reviewing the day and choose the form that feels most genuine rather than following one prescribed gratitude ritual.

Express Appreciation That Matters

3 hours and longer
  • Name the specific contributionParticipants practice replacing generic praise such as 'great job' with recognition of what the person actually did.
  • Explain why it matteredParticipants connect the contribution with its impact, such as making work easier, helping a customer, supporting the team or improving an outcome.
  • Notice the people who are easy to take for grantedParticipants identify colleagues, support functions or people in their wider lives whose contribution has become so familiar that it is rarely acknowledged.
  • Keep appreciation authenticParticipants distinguish genuine recognition from forced praise or constant positivity.

Build Gratitude Into Everyday Life

Full day only
  • Attach gratitude to an existing momentParticipants choose an existing cue such as finishing work, commuting, closing the laptop or having an evening meal and attach a brief gratitude reflection to it rather than creating another demanding routine.
  • Use gratitude after difficult days tooParticipants practice asking what helped, what mattered or what they want to remember after a hard day without requiring themselves to call the day good.
  • Share appreciation while it is still relevantParticipants identify opportunities to acknowledge helpful behavior close to when it happens instead of saving recognition for formal reviews or major milestones.
  • Avoid turning gratitude into another performance targetParticipants review whether the practice is helping them notice, appreciate or gain perspective rather than measuring perfect daily consistency.
