About this session

There is a growing body of research exploring what many people already notice intuitively: time in natural environments can feel mentally and physically different from time spent continuously indoors.

Research on nature exposure, attention restoration and psychophysiological responses suggests that even relatively modest contact with nature can support aspects of stress recovery, attention and wellbeing.

This session translates that evidence into practical everyday habits rather than asking participants to make a dramatic lifestyle change.

Participants explore how views of nature, daylight, green space, walking and brief outdoor pauses can become deliberate recovery opportunities during the working week.

Mindfulness practices are layered into those moments to help people slow down, notice more and disengage temporarily from continuous cognitive demand.

The session also introduces Joanna Macy's Work That Reconnects as an experiential framework for moving through gratitude, honest acknowledgment of difficulty, broader perspective and renewed engagement.

Participants experience a workplace-appropriate version of that cycle and leave with a realistic nature-and-mindfulness plan built around small, repeatable moments rather than idealized outdoor living.

What’s covered

Understand Why Nature Feels Different

Every length
  • Explore attention restorationParticipants explore the idea that natural environments may place different demands on attention than continuous screens, notifications and directed concentration.
  • Notice the stress-recovery effectParticipants examine research suggesting that natural environments can support aspects of physiological and psychological recovery from stress.
  • Broaden what counts as nature contactParticipants identify accessible forms of nature contact such as daylight, trees outside a window, a local park, plants, water, outdoor walking or green commuting routes.
  • Map your current nature exposureParticipants review a typical working week and notice where they spend time outdoors, encounter natural light or have opportunities for green space.

Practice Mindfulness Through Nature

Every length
  • Use the senses as an attention anchorParticipants practice noticing color, movement, sound, temperature, texture or scent in the natural environment.
  • Try a mindful nature walkParticipants practice walking with deliberate attention to pace, bodily sensation and surroundings rather than treating the walk as another opportunity to process messages or solve problems.
  • Let attention widenParticipants move from focusing on one detail to noticing the broader environment, including sound, space, movement and visual depth.
  • Practice without trying to force calmParticipants notice whatever is present during the exercise, including restlessness or distraction, without treating relaxation as the required outcome.

Experience the Work That Reconnects

3 hours and longer
  • Begin with gratitudeParticipants identify something in their lives, relationships or environment that they genuinely value.
  • Acknowledge what is difficultParticipants make space to notice concern, frustration, sadness or uncertainty without immediately fixing or reframing it.
  • See with a broader perspectiveParticipants step beyond the immediate problem and consider wider relationships, systems, time horizons or perspectives.
  • Move toward renewed engagementParticipants identify one small action, relationship or choice they want to carry forward.

Build Nature Into Everyday Wellbeing

Full day only
  • Create a five-minute nature resetParticipants design a short practice using outdoor air, daylight, a green view, walking or sensory attention that can fit between ordinary workplace demands.
  • Pair nature with existing breaksParticipants identify breaks, lunch, commuting or meeting transitions that already exist and explore how part of that time could include outdoor or natural environments rather than requiring a completely new routine.
  • Match the practice to your environmentParticipants adapt nature contact to urban, remote, office, home-working or mobility-limited contexts.
  • Build a realistic nature rhythmParticipants choose small daily and weekly practices and review which genuinely help attention, recovery or wellbeing.
