About this session

Winter can affect people in very different ways.

Some enjoy the change of season, while others experience lower energy, reduced motivation, disrupted sleep, financial pressure, social isolation or difficulty maintaining routines when daylight and outdoor opportunities become limited.

Colder months may also bring increased circulation of respiratory infections, more time in shared indoor spaces and difficult working conditions for employees exposed to cold, wind or wet environments.

In temperate climates, influenza activity commonly increases during winter, although respiratory viruses can circulate at other times too.

This practical session helps participants protect their energy and physical wellbeing without presenting winter as something everyone experiences in the same way.

It also distinguishes personal habits from workplace responsibilities involving ventilation, infection controls, suitable clothing, warming facilities, task planning and protection from cold stress.

What your people take away

  • Understand how reduced daylight, colder weather and changing routines may affect energy, sleep and motivation
  • Use daylight, movement and recovery more deliberately during darker working weeks
  • Reduce the spread and impact of respiratory infections across shared workplaces
  • Prepare for cold, wet or difficult working conditions without relying on personal resilience alone
  • Create a realistic winter routine and recognize when symptoms need further support

What’s covered

Work With Lower Light and Changing Energy

Every length
  • Notice what winter changes for youShorter days do not affect everyone in the same way, and lower energy should not automatically be dismissed as laziness or lack of motivation.
  • Make better use of available daylightDaylight helps provide timing cues for the body's daily sleep-and-wake rhythm, while reduced winter light may affect sleep and mood for some people.
  • Keep movement accessibleCold, darkness, poor weather and travel disruption can make usual forms of exercise less convenient or appealing.
  • Take persistent seasonal changes seriouslyOngoing low mood, loss of interest, marked fatigue, sleep changes or difficulty functioning may need more than a seasonal wellbeing routine.

Support Health Through the Winter Working Week

90 minutes and longer

  • Build food and hydration into busy daysCold weather may make thirst less noticeable, while deadlines, travel and seasonal events can disrupt meals and established routines.
  • Protect sleep without chasing perfectionDark mornings, artificial light, warmer bedrooms, holiday schedules and later social activity can all change sleep timing.
  • Create small recovery pointsWinter workloads can combine year-end deadlines, caring responsibilities, travel disruption and social expectations.

Stay Safe, Connected and Supported in Difficult Conditions

3 hours and longer

  • Make winter social activity more inclusiveHoliday events and end-of-year traditions can create financial pressure, alcohol pressure, cultural exclusion or additional stress for employees who are grieving, isolated or managing caring responsibilities.
