KiwiSaver temporary 3% rates start expiring

Takes effect March 31, 2027By WorkblissUpdated October 19, 2026

What’s happening

Default KiwiSaver contributions rose from 3% to 3.5% for employers and employees on April 1, 2026. Members could apply to stay at 3% for 3 to 12 months, so reductions that began April 1 end by March 31, 2027 at the latest, and Inland Revenue tells employers when to restart 3.5% deductions. Since April 2026, 16- and 17-year-olds also qualify for employer contributions.

What to do

Make sure payroll acts on Inland Revenue's end-of-reduction notices and restores the employer contribution, and use the change to run KiwiSaver education sessions.
