About this session

Alcohol and blood pressure have a more complicated relationship than a single drink being either “good” or “bad.” The effect can vary according to how much someone drinks, how often they drink, whether alcohol is consumed gradually or in a concentrated episode, and the person's wider health circumstances.

Regular heavy drinking can raise blood pressure over time. Binge drinking and higher alcohol intake are also associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes, while reducing heavy consumption can help lower blood pressure for some people.

Alcohol can also create shorter-term changes.

A reading may be temporarily higher when alcohol has been consumed shortly before a blood-pressure measurement, while some blood-pressure medicines can interact with alcohol and contribute to dizziness or an excessive drop in pressure.

This session helps participants understand the relationship without assuming that everyone must stop drinking completely. It explores drinking patterns, serving sizes, alcohol-free days, home monitoring and when professional advice may be useful.

The session is educational rather than diagnostic. It does not interpret individual blood-pressure readings, change medication or provide treatment for alcohol dependence.
