About this session
Alcohol can play very different roles in people's lives. It may be part of socializing, celebrations, client events or simply the transition between a demanding working day and home.
It can also become an automatic way to switch off when stress, loneliness, poor sleep or pressure are building.
This session gives participants a practical, non-judgmental look at how alcohol can interact with psychological wellbeing.
Participants explore the difference between short-term relaxation and what may happen later through disrupted sleep, next-day fatigue, lower mood, irritability or increased anxiety.
They privately consider when, where and why they tend to drink rather than being asked to disclose personal consumption to colleagues or their employer.
The focus then moves to intentional choice. Participants identify the needs alcohol may currently be meeting, build realistic alternatives, plan for social situations and learn when self-management is appropriate and when professional support is the safer next step.
The session does not diagnose alcohol problems or tell participants whether they should drink. It provides education, reflection tools and practical options while respecting individual circumstances.

What’s covered
Understand the Alcohol–Wellbeing Connection
Every length- Map where alcohol fits into the weekParticipants privately map the situations in which alcohol most often appears across a typical working week.
- Separate relaxation from recoveryParticipants explore why alcohol can initially feel calming while still affecting what happens later.
- Connect alcohol with sleep qualityParticipants examine how drinking close to sleep can change the quality and continuity of the night even when falling asleep initially feels easier.
- Notice the next-day effectUsing private reflection rather than group disclosure, participants compare drinking occasions with how they tend to feel the following day.
Understand Your Own Pattern
90 minutes and longer- Identify what the drink is doing for youParticipants consider the need alcohol may be meeting in different situations.
- Map the trigger–routine–reward loopParticipants choose one recurring drinking situation and map what tends to happen immediately beforehand, what the drinking routine looks like and what reward follows.
- Weigh the short-term and delayed effectsParticipants create a personal balance sheet of what drinking genuinely gives them and what it may cost later.
- Notice when the pattern is changingParticipants consider whether frequency, quantity, tolerance, recovery or reasons for drinking have shifted over time.
Make More Intentional Choices
3 hours and longer- Decide before the moment decides for youParticipants choose an upcoming dinner, celebration, difficult evening or other predictable situation and make their decision in advance.
- Match the alternative to the needRather than offering a generic list of alcohol substitutes, participants identify what they are actually trying to achieve—relaxation, reward, connection, stimulation or a transition out of work.
- Navigate social pressure without over-explainingParticipants practice short responses for situations where colleagues or clients encourage another drink.
- Run a low-pressure real-world experimentWhere self-directed change is appropriate, participants choose one small experiment such as changing an unwind routine, alternating drink choices or approaching one social event differently.
Know When More Support Is Needed
Full day only- Know when self-management may not be enoughParticipants learn that repeated loss of control, significant harm, concern from others, withdrawal symptoms or a sense that alcohol has become difficult to manage are reasons to seek qualified support rather than relying only on a wellbeing plan.
- Do not make dependence a DIY projectParticipants are reminded that people who may be physically dependent on alcohol can need medical guidance before making abrupt changes.
- Support a colleague without becoming their clinicianParticipants practice how to express concern based on what they have observed, listen without interrogating and signpost available support.
- Make workplace socializing more inclusiveParticipants examine how celebrations, networking and client entertainment can make alcohol feel compulsory even when nobody intends that outcome.
