About this session

Feeling out of breath after climbing several flights of stairs, exercising, rushing for a train, or working hard physically can be completely normal.

But breathlessness can also occur with asthma, respiratory infections, heart conditions, anemia, anxiety, reduced fitness, lung disease, environmental exposure, and many other causes, so the pattern, severity, timing, and accompanying symptoms matter.

This session helps participants become better observers of their breathing without encouraging self-diagnosis.

They explore what is normal for them, what activities usually trigger breathlessness, whether something has changed, and which symptoms should prompt routine medical review versus urgent help.

The emphasis is practical: noticing changes in everyday activities, describing symptoms clearly, understanding common influences on breathing, and knowing when "I'm just unfit" or "I'm probably stressed" is no longer a sufficient explanation.

What your people take away

  • Understand what breathlessness is and why it can have many different causes
  • Recognize the difference between expected exertional breathlessness and a meaningful change from normal
  • Identify useful clues such as when symptoms occur, what triggers them, and how quickly they settle
  • Explore how fitness, respiratory conditions, infections, anxiety, air quality, smoking, and cardiovascular health can influence breathing
  • Learn how to describe breathlessness clearly when speaking with a healthcare professional
  • Recognize red-flag symptoms that require urgent or emergency medical attention

What’s covered

Is Your Breathing Pattern Changing?

Every length
  • Start with your normalParticipants think about activities such as walking, stairs, hills, carrying shopping, commuting, or physical work and consider what breathing effort is usual for them.
  • Map when it happensParticipants identify whether breathlessness appears during exercise, at rest, during particular tasks, around dust or fumes, in cold air, during illness, or in stressful situations.
  • Notice what comes with itCough, wheeze, chest discomfort, dizziness, fever, palpitations, swelling, fatigue, or difficulty lying flat can provide important additional context.
  • Know when "I'm just unfit" needs reassessingReduced fitness can certainly make activity feel harder, but persistent or worsening unexplained breathlessness should not automatically be dismissed as deconditioning.

Understand Why Breathlessness Happens

90 minutes and longer
  • The lungs are only one part of breathingEffective breathing depends on the airways and lungs, but also on the heart and circulation, breathing muscles, blood, and the body's demand for oxygen.
  • Airway conditions can make breathing harderAsthma and other airway conditions can cause symptoms such as breathlessness, cough, chest tightness, or wheeze.
  • Environment & activity can change breathingExercise, altitude, heat, cold, air pollution, smoke, allergens, and occupational exposures can make breathing feel more difficult in some circumstances.
  • Anxiety can affect breathing — but should not become the default explanationStress and panic can create very real sensations of breathlessness and changes in breathing pattern.

Describe Breathlessness So It Can Be Assessed

3 hours and longer
  • Explain what you were doing when it started"Breathless" can mean very different things to different people, so context matters.
  • Describe the change over timeParticipants consider whether symptoms appeared suddenly, developed gradually, come and go, or have progressively worsened.
  • Record relevant context without obsessive trackingRecent infections, smoking, new workplace exposures, established respiratory conditions, medication changes, and other relevant circumstances can be worth mentioning.
  • Prepare useful questionsParticipants build a short list of questions for a healthcare appointment, such as what might need investigating, whether any tests are appropriate, what changes should trigger faster follow-up, and what activity is appropriate while the cause is being assessed.

Know When Breathlessness Needs Faster Action

Full day only
  • Sudden severe breathlessness is differentSevere difficulty breathing, gasping, choking, or being unable to speak normally because of breathlessness requires urgent emergency assessment.
  • Chest symptoms & other red flags matterBreathlessness accompanied by a tight or heavy chest, spreading chest pain, blue or very pale skin, sudden confusion, or other significant deterioration can indicate a medical emergency.
  • Worsening breathlessness also deserves attentionSymptoms do not have to be dramatic to justify medical review.
  • Follow existing respiratory plans where relevantPeople with diagnosed conditions such as asthma or COPD may already have personalized instructions for managing worsening symptoms.
