About this session

A difficult email arrives. A colleague's message feels abrupt.

A manager asks for a meeting without explaining why. Before all the facts are available, the mind may already have created a story about what is happening—and that story can quickly affect emotion, communication and behavior.

This session takes practical ideas from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and adapts them for non-clinical workplace learning.

Participants map the connection between situations, thoughts, emotions and responses, then examine the assumptions and thinking traps that can make difficult moments harder.

They practice testing interpretations against evidence and generating credible alternative explanations rather than forcing positive thinking.

The session then moves from thinking into action. Participants practice pausing when triggered, rephrasing reactive responses, considering intention and impact and choosing practical regulation or problem-solving tools.

The aim is not to think positively about every workplace problem. It is to see situations more clearly and create more choice in what happens next.

What’s covered

Map the Thought–Emotion–Behavior Loop

Every length
  • Start with the situation, not the conclusionParticipants choose a recent workplace trigger such as an abrupt message, critical comment, delayed response or unexpected request and describe what actually happened before explaining why.
  • Map the thought, emotion and responseParticipants trace what happened next: the first thought or assumption, the emotion it created and the behavior that followed.
  • Notice when the threat response takes overParticipants identify their early signs of feeling threatened or triggered—rushing, tension, defensiveness, withdrawal or an urge to act immediately. 'Threat brain' and 'thinking brain' may be used as simple facilitation shorthand, but not as literal separate brain systems or diagnostic labels.
  • Create space for another perspectiveParticipants pause before treating their first interpretation as the only explanation and consider what the situation might look like from another person's position.

Test Assumptions and Thinking Traps

90 minutes and longer
  • Spot the thinking traps that show up at workParticipants identify common patterns such as mind-reading, catastrophizing, all-or-nothing conclusions, personalization and jumping to conclusions using realistic workplace examples.
  • Use story vs factsParticipants divide a difficult situation into observable facts and the story they have built around those facts.
  • Test the evidence for and againstParticipants choose one important assumption and identify evidence supporting it, evidence pointing in another direction and information that remains unknown.
  • Generate credible alternative explanationsParticipants use zooming in and zooming out to create two or three plausible explanations for the same situation, then identify what action makes sense across those possibilities.

Respond Rather Than React

3 hours and longer
  • Map the a-B-C of a triggerParticipants use a simple A-B-C map: the activating situation, the belief or interpretation that follows and the emotional or behavioral consequence.
  • Use a strategic time-outParticipants practice creating a short pause when emotion is too high for a useful response.
  • Rephrase the response before you send itParticipants take reactive statements they might genuinely think or type and practice rewriting them into language that communicates the issue without unnecessary escalation.
  • Move from reaction into problem-solvingParticipants work through realistic workplace challenges and identify the problem that actually needs solving, available options, relevant constraints and the next useful action.

Build Healthier Everyday Patterns

Full day only
  • Separate intention from impactParticipants examine situations where someone's intention and the effect of their behavior do not match.
  • Use 'i' statements without making them formulaicParticipants practice communicating their experience, the observable situation and what they need next without presenting assumptions about another person's motives as facts.
  • Choose a reset tool that fits the momentParticipants practice or review short regulation options drawn from the existing workshop, such as paced breathing, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation or brief mindfulness.
  • Know when thinking differently is not the solutionParticipants identify situations where the next step is direct action.
