About this session
Some jobs ask people to spend a significant part of the day listening, supporting, reassuring, resolving and absorbing difficult information.
Over time, repeated exposure to other people's distress can leave a person feeling emotionally flat, unusually irritable, less patient or as though there is simply less of themselves available for the next conversation.
This session helps participants recognize that pattern without turning normal human responses into a diagnosis.
They identify where emotional load is accumulating, distinguish empathy from taking responsibility for outcomes they cannot control and examine the habits that make one difficult interaction follow them into the next.
Participants then build practical ways to recover: closing one conversation before entering another, using boundaries around availability and responsibility, asking for support early and protecting restorative parts of the working day.
The final module looks beyond individual coping and helps participants identify where supervision, workload, team norms or organizational support also need to change.

What’s covered
Recognize the Emotional Load
Every length- Map where the emotional work actually happensParticipants identify the parts of their role that involve repeated exposure to distress, conflict, difficult disclosures, complaints, crisis or emotionally charged decision-making.
- Notice your early signs of depletionParticipants identify changes that may signal reduced emotional capacity, such as unusual irritability, impatience, dread before conversations, emotional flatness, difficulty switching off or feeling that every new request is 'one thing too many.' They use patterns over time rather than diagnosing themselves from one difficult day.
- Distinguish compassion fatigue from burnoutParticipants compare emotional depletion linked specifically to repeated caring or distress exposure with broader burnout patterns driven by sustained workload, control, recognition or organizational conditions.
- Notice what follows you home or into the next taskParticipants identify conversations or situations that remain mentally active after the work itself is over.
Care Without Carrying Everything
90 minutes and longer- Separate empathy from responsibilityParticipants distinguish understanding and caring about another person's experience from becoming responsible for fixing the entire outcome.
- Notice when helping becomes over-functioningParticipants identify situations where they repeatedly take on extra emotional or practical responsibility because saying no feels uncaring.
- Use boundaries that preserve the relationshipParticipants practice language that remains warm while being clear about availability, scope and next steps.
- Allow support to be good without being perfectParticipants examine the pressure to always say the ideal thing or create a successful outcome for the person they are helping.
Recover Between Demanding Interactions
3 hours and longer- Close the conversation before the next one startsParticipants build a short end-of-interaction routine.
- Use a short physical resetParticipants identify an accessible physical transition such as standing, walking, stretching, breathing slowly or changing environment for a few minutes.
- Decide what needs debrief and what needs releaseParticipants distinguish situations that genuinely need consultation, supervision or follow-up from those that are complete but continue replaying mentally.
- Protect recovery outside the support roleParticipants identify the activities and relationships that restore a sense of self beyond being the person who helps everyone else.
Build Support Around the Supporter
Full day only- Ask for help before capacity is goneParticipants identify who they can approach for practical help, workload decisions, perspective, supervision or professional support and what they would actually ask for.
- Make emotional load visible without breaking confidentialityParticipants practice discussing the volume or impact of emotionally demanding work without sharing unnecessary identifying details about the people involved.
- Create team routes for debrief and escalationParticipants identify where emotionally heavy situations currently go when one employee should not carry them alone.
- Know when the work itself needs to changeParticipants distinguish personal recovery needs from structural problems such as unsafe caseloads, chronic understaffing, repeated traumatic exposure or inadequate supervision.
