About this session

Desk-based work can look physically easy while still being surprisingly tiring.

Hours of screen focus, repeated meetings, sustained concentration, limited movement and very little change in environment can leave people mentally flat, visually tired, physically uncomfortable or struggling to concentrate by the later part of the day.

This session helps participants understand their own fatigue pattern rather than assuming every slump has the same cause. They distinguish sustained-attention fatigue from visual strain, physical stillness, interruption overload and days with too little genuine recovery.

They then test short interventions that fit inside ordinary work: changing position, moving briefly, looking away from the screen, stepping into a different environment and creating clearer transitions between demanding tasks.

The final part focuses on workday design. Participants review their desk environment, identify where breaks are repeatedly lost and create a realistic rhythm for focused work, meetings, movement and recovery.

The aim is not to optimize every minute or eliminate tiredness. It is to notice fatigue earlier and build enough variation into the day that depletion does not have to reach crisis point before anything changes.

  • Distinguish visual, physical, attentional and interruption-related fatigue
  • Use short movement, visual and environmental resets before fatigue becomes severe
  • Adjust desk and workday conditions to reduce unnecessary cognitive and physical friction
  • Build a sustainable desk-day rhythm for focus, meetings, breaks and recovery

What’s covered

Map Your Desk-Fatigue Pattern

Every length
  • Track when your energy actually changesParticipants map a typical desk-based day and identify when concentration, alertness or patience begins to change.
  • Distinguish different types of fatigueParticipants compare visual tiredness, physical stiffness, sustained-attention fatigue and overload from constant interruption.
  • Notice how you currently push throughParticipants identify what they tend to do when fatigue appears.
  • Choose one high-friction desk periodParticipants choose one recurring period where desk fatigue most consistently affects their working experience and define what 'better' would mean there.

Interrupt Fatigue Before You Hit the Wall

90 minutes and longer
  • Use short movement as a change of stateParticipants identify natural opportunities to stand, walk or move between desk-based tasks and test a brief movement reset that fits their ability and environment.
  • Give the eyes a different jobParticipants practice regularly looking away from near screen focus toward a more distant point, blinking normally and creating brief screen-free moments where practical.
  • Change cognitive mode between demanding tasksParticipants identify moments where they move directly from concentrated analysis into another demanding task with no transition.
  • Build breaks around task boundariesParticipants stop treating breaks as something that happens only when a timer interrupts them.

Make the Desk Environment Work Harder for You

3 hours and longer
  • Reduce glare and unnecessary visual effortParticipants review screen position, text size, brightness, glare and nearby lighting and identify simple adjustments that make screen-focused work more comfortable.
  • Build physical variation, not posture perfectionParticipants identify where they remain in one position for unnecessarily long periods and create more opportunities to change position within their own physical abilities.
  • Use environmental change deliberatelyWhere practical, participants identify opportunities to change setting during the day through outdoor breaks, walking conversations, another workspace or simply moving away from the screen.
  • Reduce avoidable sensory competitionParticipants examine noise, notifications, multiple screens and other environmental inputs competing with focused work.

Build a Desk-Day Rhythm That Holds

Full day only
  • Place recovery before complete depletionParticipants review where breaks currently occur only after concentration has already collapsed and choose earlier points for recovery.
  • Protect a meaningful midday resetParticipants examine whether lunch has become another period of screen work or meetings and identify what a realistic midday change of mode could look like.
  • Create an end-of-day transitionParticipants design a short transition that marks the end of prolonged desk work, particularly when working from home.
  • Know when the workday needs to changeParticipants identify fatigue patterns driven by back-to-back meetings, unrealistic workload, insufficient breaks or unsuitable working conditions.
