About this session
Commissioning and expansion phases create a very different working environment from steady-state data-center operations.
New halls may be coming online while existing infrastructure remains live, contractors and OEM teams may be working side by side, temporary routes and barriers may change normal access, and testing, installation, snagging, documentation, and handover activity may continue across long or irregular hours.
The workload can intensify quickly.
Compressed schedules, repeated commissioning tests, equipment deliveries, cable installation, temporary ventilation, construction dust, noise, heat, access restrictions, contractor interfaces, night work, travel between zones, extended standing, repeated lifting, and high-consequence technical decisions can all accumulate across the same project phase.
A task that is manageable in isolation may become far more demanding when repeated hundreds of times across several weeks of build and commissioning.
This session helps participants improve the aspects of project work they can control while keeping project-design factors visible.
Staff can plan movement, use available aids, manage recovery, coordinate handovers, recognize cumulative fatigue, and report recurring barriers, but they cannot personally fix unrealistic project timelines, inadequate staffing, poor staging, unsafe access, weak contractor coordination, or repeatedly changing work conditions.
What your people take away
- Understand how commissioning and expansion work differs from steady-state operations in physical, cognitive, environmental, and recovery demand
- Map workload across installation, testing, snagging, validation, commissioning, migrations, contractor activity, and handover
- Recognize how repetition, temporary access, equipment movement, noise, heat, dust, night work, and schedule pressure combine
- Use staging, task sequencing, team coordination, movement planning, recovery, and structured communication more deliberately
- Recognize cumulative fatigue across multi-week projects rather than judging workload from one task or one shift
- Distinguish worker-level strategies from project planning, staffing, contractor management, equipment, access, schedule, and facility controls

What’s covered
Understand How Commissioning Demand Builds
Every length- Project work changes the normal operating environmentTemporary routes, new equipment, open work areas, contractors, packaging, tools, barriers, and incomplete infrastructure can make the same facility feel completely different during expansion.
- Volume changes the same technical taskInstalling one component, dressing one cable bundle, or completing one rack may be manageable, while repeating the same work across an entire hall creates a very different exposure.
- Multiple demands can occur at the same timePhysical installation, technical troubleshooting, contractor coordination, documentation, deadlines, noise, and environmental conditions may all overlap.
- The project phase changes week by weekDelivery, fit-out, installation, testing, snagging, commissioning, and handover create different workload patterns and environmental conditions.
Improve Access, Staging & Installation Workflow
90 minutes and longer- Staging can remove a large amount of unnecessary handlingPoorly positioned equipment, packaging, tools, and replacement components can create repeated carrying and rehandling across a project.
- Temporary routes can change every handling taskA server, cable reel, cabinet, tool case, or component may become much harder to move when routes include barriers, congestion, stairs, temporary flooring, or long diversions.
- Task variation only helps when the exposure changesMoving from cable dressing to connector work may still leave the same hands, shoulders, and posture under repetitive load.
- Access should support the work that actually has to happenTemporary layouts that leave technicians reaching around equipment, kneeling for long periods, or working repeatedly at awkward heights can increase cumulative strain.
Manage Contractor Intensity, Schedule Pressure & Temporary Conditions
3 hours and longer- Many teams in one space can create a new workloadContractors, OEMs, internal engineers, commissioning staff, logistics, and facilities teams may all compete for access, routes, staging, information, and workspace.
- Compressed schedules can change how work is performedLate deliveries, failed tests, rework, milestone pressure, and approaching handover dates can encourage longer hours and reduced recovery.
- Temporary environmental conditions can become prolongedDust, noise, temporary ventilation, heat, barriers, lighting changes, and construction activity may continue for weeks during a major build.
- Night work can add fatigue to already demanding project workCommissioning and migration windows may be scheduled overnight while teams are also completing physically and cognitively demanding tasks.
Recognize Patterns & Strengthen Project Work Design
Full day only- Recurring difficulty can reveal recurring project conditionsIf fatigue, access problems, repeated strain, congestion, or communication difficulty consistently appears around particular project phases or work zones, the pattern may be predictable.
- Report the project conditions, not just the body partUseful information may include project phase, task volume, equipment involved, route, access, contractor density, shift timing, environmental conditions, overtime, and recovery opportunity.
- Personal endurance has clear limitsStaff can pace themselves, use available aids, organize tools, and communicate, but they cannot personally add staff, redesign staging, create access, reduce project volume, or extend unrealistic deadlines.
- Aggregated project patterns can guide better expansion designDe-identified workforce themes may reveal particular phases, routes, work types, contractor interfaces, or schedule conditions associated with recurring difficulty.
