About this session

Consultative selling starts before the salesperson presents a solution. It begins with understanding enough about the client's environment to ask useful questions while remaining genuinely open to discovering that the initial assumption may be wrong.

Participants learn how to prepare around the client's business, market, priorities, likely pressures and stakeholders without turning preparation into a script for telling the client what their problem is.

The session then moves into discovery and diagnosis. Participants distinguish between what a client initially asks for and what the organization may actually be trying to achieve.

They practice asking questions that uncover context, consequences, priorities, constraints, previous attempts, decision criteria and the outcomes that would make a solution worthwhile.

Listening, summarizing and testing understanding are treated as core selling skills rather than pauses between pitches.

Once the need is clearer, participants learn to connect the client's situation with an appropriate response.

Instead of listing features, they build a value hypothesis: what should change, why the proposed approach could help, what evidence supports that view and where uncertainty remains.

They learn to tailor recommendations, discuss tradeoffs and quantify value where there is credible information without inventing precision simply to make a business case look stronger.

The final part of the session focuses on the relationship beyond the immediate recommendation.

Consultative sellers earn credibility by being useful, setting realistic expectations, challenging constructively when necessary, following through on commitments and remaining interested in whether value was actually achieved. The goal is not to appear like a trusted advisor.

It is to behave in ways that make trust commercially and professionally reasonable.

What’s covered

Prepare for a Consultative Conversation

Every length
  • Understand the client contextParticipants identify the business, market, operational and organizational context that may shape the client's priorities.
  • Build a discovery hypothesisA hypothesis gives the salesperson somewhere to begin without pretending to know the answer.
  • Plan questions with a purposeParticipants build a question path covering context, current state, desired outcomes, problems, impact, constraints, previous approaches, decision criteria and next steps.
  • Enter with curiosity, not a pitchConsultative conversations deteriorate quickly when every question is simply a setup for a predetermined product message.

Discover What Really Matters

90 minutes and longer
  • Move beyond the initial requestThe first request is not always the underlying need.
  • Listen for impact & consequenceParticipants investigate how the issue affects customers, revenue, cost, risk, productivity, time, quality, capability, employees or strategic priorities where those consequences are genuinely relevant.
  • Understand success, constraints & tradeoffsParticipants ask what a successful outcome would look like, how the client would recognize improvement and what requirements or constraints a viable response must respect.
  • Summarize & test the diagnosisStrong discovery includes periods where the salesperson stops asking questions and reflects the situation back.

Co-Create the Right Value Proposition

3 hours and longer
  • Build a value hypothesisParticipants translate discovery into a simple logic.
  • Align the solution to the needInstead of presenting every available capability, participants select the parts of the solution that directly respond to the agreed priorities, constraints and success criteria.
  • Make value concreteParticipants connect capabilities with operational or business consequences so the client can understand what would actually become easier, faster, safer, stronger or more effective.
  • Recommend, challenge & discuss tradeoffsConsultative selling does not mean agreeing with everything the client says.

Build the Relationship Beyond the Sale

Full day only
  • Create mutual next stepsParticipants finish consultative conversations with clear, proportionate next steps rather than vague promises to 'follow up.' They define who will do what, what information is still needed and what decision or conversation comes next.
  • Build trust through professional judgmentTrusted-advisor status is a consequence of behavior, not a phrase a salesperson claims.
  • Stay connected to value realizationThe relationship should not disappear when the contract is signed.
  • Grow the partnership from new valueStrategic account growth should follow new client needs and demonstrated value rather than automatic cross-selling.
