About this session

Many sales negotiations become discount conversations long before they need to.

A buyer asks for 15% off, procurement compares the offer with a competitor, an executive introduces a new condition late in the process, or the customer says the deal can only proceed if the seller 'does something on price.' The seller then negotiates one variable — price — while leaving the rest of the commercial agreement largely untouched.

Beyond Discounting develops a more disciplined approach. Participants learn to recognize the moment a sales conversation becomes a negotiation, understand what is actually being negotiated and protect the value already established during the sales process.

They examine the customer's commercial interests, deal economics, decision constraints and potential tradeables before making concessions.

Participants then learn to negotiate across the whole agreement. Price may be only one variable alongside scope, volume, contract length, payment timing, implementation, service levels, commitments, risk allocation, renewal terms or other legitimate commercial conditions.

The goal is to exchange value rather than give value away.

The session also prepares salespeople for procurement pressure, competitor references, aggressive anchors, late-stage demands and stalled negotiations.

Participants learn to slow down automatic concession behavior, use conditional movement, build packages, involve internal stakeholders at the right moments and close with enough clarity that the negotiated value is not lost during contracting or implementation.

What your people take away

  • Recognize when a sales conversation has moved from selling into commercial negotiation
  • Defend value and respond to price pressure without relying on immediate discounting
  • Use conditional concessions and give / get logic rather than one-way movement
  • Negotiate across price, scope, timing, volume, payment, implementation and other commercial variables
  • Navigate procurement, competitor comparisons, anchors and late-stage pressure with greater discipline
  • Close agreements clearly and protect negotiated value through contracting and implementation

What’s covered

Recognize the Commercial Negotiation & Protect the Deal

Every length
  • Know when selling becomes negotiatingParticipants distinguish discovery, objection handling, persuasion and negotiation.
  • Understand what the buyer is really trying to changeA request for a lower price may reflect budget limits, internal approval thresholds, benchmarking, procurement objectives, perceived risk, lack of value clarity or a deliberate negotiating move.
  • Know the economics of the dealParticipants identify the variables that materially affect deal value, including price, volume, scope, contract duration, payment timing, implementation effort, service commitments and other relevant commercial terms.
  • Establish commercial boundaries & approvalsParticipants clarify what they can negotiate independently, what requires approval and which conditions would make the proposed agreement commercially unattractive.

Hold the Value Under Price Pressure

90 minutes and longer
  • Return the conversation to valueParticipants connect commercial discussion with the outcomes, problems, risks or value established earlier in the sales process rather than defending price in isolation.
  • Handle discount requests without automatic movementParticipants practice pausing, clarifying the request and understanding what would change if the price changed before deciding whether movement is justified.
  • Respond to budget & competitor pressureParticipants distinguish 'we do not have the budget,' 'another provider is cheaper,' 'procurement requires a reduction' and 'we need a better commercial case' because each may require a different response.
  • Use conditional concessionsWhen movement is appropriate, participants connect it with reciprocal value using clear if / then or give / get logic.

Trade Across the Whole Deal — Not Just the Price

3 hours and longer
  • Expand the negotiation into multiple variablesParticipants identify all legitimate variables available in the deal rather than allowing the negotiation to collapse into a single price number.
  • Identify differences in priorityA powerful trade exists when one side values something more than it costs the other side to provide.
  • Build packages instead of conceding issue by issueParticipants combine several variables into alternative commercial packages so the customer can compare complete deal structures rather than negotiating every term independently.
  • Coordinate the internal deal teamComplex commercial changes may involve sales leadership, finance, legal, implementation, operations, security or another internal owner.

Navigate Procurement, Pressure & the Close

Full day only
  • Work constructively with procurementParticipants recognize procurement's legitimate responsibility to test commercial value, compare options, reduce risk and improve terms and avoid treating procurement automatically as the enemy.
  • Respond to anchors, pressure & last-minute demandsParticipants practice responding to aggressive opening numbers, 'best and final' requests, competitor references, end-of-quarter pressure and late-stage demands without reacting automatically.
  • Handle impasse without panicked discountingParticipants identify whether the negotiation is stalled because of one issue, incomplete authority, missing information, incompatible economics or a tactical attempt to create pressure.
  • Close with commercial clarityParticipants confirm what has been agreed across price, scope, timing, commitments, conditions, approvals and next steps and identify any items still subject to contracting or internal review.
