About this session

The difference between a bystander and a first-aid responder is a handful of sequences, rehearsed. Built specifically for the "CPR & AED Training" context, this session stays concrete and respects your team's time. Expect muscle memory — not memorization.

What your people take away

  • Run the recovery position in under 20 seconds from any starting orientation
  • Deliver the FAST stroke assessment (Face, Arms, Speech, Time)
  • Recognize the choking algorithm — 5 back blows, 5 abdominal thrusts, repeat
  • Apply CPR at 30 compressions to 2 breaths, at 100–120 compressions per minute
  • Call the Samaritans SHUSH framework for mental-health first aid

What’s covered

The First 90 Seconds

Every length

Assessment and response

  • Start CPR at 30:2, aim for 100–120 compressions per minute, 5–6cm depth on an adult
  • Check scene safety first — a dead first-aid responder helps no one
  • Call emergency services early — use speakerphone or delegate the call by name, not just 'someone'
  • Check responsiveness with shake-and-shout, then check breathing for up to 10 seconds

Common Workplace Scenarios

Every length
  • The day-to-day incidentsRespond to a heart attack (tight chest, pale, sweaty, nauseous) by calling emergency services and sitting them down

The Human Side of the Response

90 minutes only

The other half of first aid

  • Document incidents in line with RIDDOR requirements if reportable
  • Know when to signpost — Samaritans (116 123 UK), local crisis lines, EAP
  • Know your PEEP and evacuation routes before you need them
  • Run a buddy-check system on the responder the day after
