About this session
Construction safety is shaped by change. People, plant, materials, temporary structures, excavations, energy sources and multiple contractors may all be moving through the same project at different stages of work.
A control that was suitable yesterday may no longer be enough after access changes, another trade arrives or the physical site develops.
Participants learn how to read a construction site as a changing risk system.
They examine the major hazard families found across construction, including work at height, moving plant, excavations, falling objects, electrical energy, lifting operations, temporary arrangements and higher-risk work controlled through permits or specialist procedures.
The session also reinforces clear boundaries. Awareness training helps people recognize risk, follow site controls, communicate changes and stop when conditions are unsafe.
It does not qualify participants to operate plant, erect scaffolds, inspect temporary works, perform electrical isolation or carry out other specialist construction activities without the required training and authorization.
What your people take away
- Understand why construction risk changes as the site, workforce and work sequence develop
- Recognize major construction hazard families and the controls typically used around them
- Understand how access, exclusion zones, permits, signage and site rules support coordinated work
- Recognize the boundaries around plant, lifting, temporary works, electrical work and other specialist activities
- Use stop-work, reporting and escalation when site conditions no longer match the planned controls
- Learn from near misses, interface problems and recurring workarounds to strengthen the wider site safety system

What’s covered
Read the Construction Site as a Changing Risk System
Every length- Expect the site to changeConstruction sites develop continuously as structures rise, access routes change, materials move and different trades enter or leave the project.
- Understand the purpose of site induction & local rulesSite induction provides information about local hazards, access, emergency arrangements, restricted areas, reporting routes and project-specific expectations.
- Look at interfaces between different activitiesRisk often appears where activities overlap: pedestrians with plant, lifting above occupied areas, hot work beside combustible material, one trade removing protection another trade depends on or deliveries entering active work zones.
- Recognize when a workaround has become normalTemporary access, missing barriers, improvised storage, blocked routes or repeated shortcuts can gradually become accepted because work continues without an immediate incident.
Recognize Critical Construction Hazards
90 minutes and longer- Control falls & falling objectsOpen edges, incomplete floors, scaffolds, ladders, roof work, openings and temporary access can expose workers to falls, while tools and materials can endanger people below.
- Separate people from moving plant & vehiclesExcavators, loaders, cranes, trucks, telehandlers and other mobile equipment can create blind spots, swing zones and reversing risk.
- Respect excavations, ground conditions & temporary worksExcavations can create collapse, fall, access and buried-service hazards, while temporary structures may be safety-critical even though they are not part of the finished building.
- Control energy, electrical & fire-related hazardsTemporary power, electrical services, energized equipment, hot work, fuels and other energy sources can create serious construction hazards.
Work Within the Site Controls
3 hours and longer- Understand permits as a control systemSome higher-risk activities require formal authorization before work begins.
- Respect barriers, exclusion zones & controlled accessBarriers and exclusion zones may protect people from lifting operations, moving plant, open excavations, falling objects, electrical hazards or other active work.
- Use PPE as one layer of protectionHard hats, eye protection, footwear, hearing protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing and other PPE may be required for particular site hazards, but PPE does not remove the source of the hazard.
- Keep access, housekeeping & material storage under controlCables, debris, packaging, stored materials, temporary equipment and changing access routes can create trip, access and falling-object hazards.
Stop, Communicate & Strengthen the Site System
Full day only- Stop when the conditions no longer match the planMissing edge protection, changed access, damaged equipment, unexpected services, altered weather, another trade entering the area or an unplanned lift can all change the conditions under which work was originally planned.
- Report the condition — not just the incidentA near miss, damaged barrier, recurring route conflict or unsafe shortcut can reveal a weakness before someone is hurt.
- Coordinate across contractors & tradesOne team can unintentionally create risk for another through access changes, removed protection, simultaneous work or poorly coordinated deliveries and lifting operations.
- Learn from recurring pressure & workaroundsRepeated shortcuts may point to unrealistic schedules, poor access, missing equipment, design issues, inadequate sequencing or insufficient supervision.
