About this session

Emotion is part of how people respond to uncertainty, pressure, disappointment, conflict, change, and setbacks.

Frustration may signal an obstacle, anxiety may increase attention to threat, disappointment may reflect something that mattered, and anger may point toward a perceived boundary or unfairness.

The challenge is not having these responses — it is being able to understand them accurately enough to choose what happens next.

Participants develop the emotional-intelligence capabilities that support resilience: recognizing emotions earlier, distinguishing between similar emotional states, identifying triggers and interpretations, creating space between feeling and action, choosing regulation strategies appropriate to the situation, and recovering after emotionally demanding experiences.

The session also explores relational resilience. Participants learn how perspective-taking, empathy, support-seeking, clear communication, and relationship repair can increase the resources available during difficult periods.

The goal is greater response flexibility — the ability to experience emotion without either being controlled by it or pretending it is not there.

What’s covered

Recognize What Your Emotions Are Telling You

Every length
  • Notice emotion earlierEmotional reactions often become easier to manage when they are noticed before they reach full intensity.
  • Name the emotion more preciselyWords such as 'stressed', 'bad', or 'fine' can hide important differences between frustration, disappointment, anxiety, irritation, overwhelm, uncertainty, embarrassment, or discouragement.
  • Identify the trigger & the interpretationThe same event can produce different emotional responses depending on what someone believes it means.
  • Use emotion as informationEmotions can contain useful information without automatically providing the correct conclusion or action.

Regulate Emotion Without Suppressing It

90 minutes and longer
  • Create space between feeling & actionStrong emotion can create an urge to respond immediately through defensiveness, withdrawal, confrontation, reassurance-seeking, or impulsive action.
  • Choose the strategy for the situationNo single regulation technique works equally well everywhere.
  • Reappraise without forced positivityReappraisal means looking for another credible way to understand a situation, not pretending that something difficult is secretly wonderful.
  • Know when to step away & returnContinuing a conversation at peak emotional intensity is not always productive.

Use Emotional Intelligence Through Setbacks & Uncertainty

3 hours and longer
  • Separate the event from the storyA setback can quickly become a broader conclusion: 'This always happens', 'I cannot handle this', or 'Everything is going wrong.'
  • Focus on control, influence & responseResilience weakens when attention remains fixed on elements that cannot currently be changed while available choices receive little attention.
  • Recover before demanding more capacityEmotional resilience includes restoration.
  • Turn experience into adaptationResilience is strengthened when difficult experiences generate useful learning rather than simply becoming something to endure.

Build Relational & Sustainable Resilience

Full day only
  • Use empathy without absorbing everythingUnderstanding another person's emotions can improve collaboration and support, but empathy does not require taking responsibility for every feeling around us.
  • Ask for the support you actually needSupport can mean listening, perspective, practical help, information, advocacy, problem-solving, feedback, or simply not handling something alone.
  • Repair after emotional frictionPressure can affect tone, patience, judgment, and communication.
  • Build an emotional resilience systemResilience becomes easier when people know their triggers, early-warning signals, useful regulation strategies, support network, recovery needs, and what requires escalation or wider workplace change.
