About this session

Career transitions can be exciting and unsettling at the same time. A promotion, new role, internal move, return to work, redundancy, career change or move into a different industry can affect confidence, identity, routine, relationships and the sense of what comes next.

This session helps participants understand the emotional side of transition without treating uncertainty as a problem to eliminate.

They identify what they are leaving behind, what is changing and what they may be carrying into the next stage through assumptions, expectations or self-doubt.

Participants then work on confidence, decision-making, support and practical adjustment.

They learn how to separate temporary uncertainty from permanent conclusions about capability, create manageable next steps and build continuity between the person they were in the previous stage and the person they are becoming.

The aim is not to feel completely certain before moving forward. It is to navigate change with more perspective, self-awareness and support.

  • Separate temporary transition discomfort from conclusions about capability or identity

What’s covered

Understand What the Transition Is Changing

Every length
  • Map what is actually changingParticipants identify what is changing across responsibilities, routines, relationships, expectations, location, status or working style.
  • Notice what you are leaving behindParticipants identify what the previous role or stage provided, such as familiarity, confidence, identity, relationships or status.
  • Identify what feels most uncertainParticipants identify the unanswered questions currently creating the most mental load and separate what can be clarified now from what will only become clearer with experience.
  • Distinguish change from failureParticipants examine whether discomfort, confusion or slower performance is being interpreted as evidence that the transition is going badly.

Protect Confidence During the In-Between

90 minutes and longer
  • Separate being new from being incapableParticipants identify where unfamiliar systems, people or expectations are creating self-doubt and distinguish a current learning gap from a global judgment about competence.
  • Stop using expert performance as the starting standardParticipants examine whether they are comparing their early-stage performance with colleagues who have had significantly more time, context or experience.
  • Use evidence to protect self-beliefParticipants identify skills, successes and difficult transitions they have already navigated and use those as evidence when confidence dips.
  • Ask for information before assuming you should knowParticipants practice identifying what they genuinely need to learn and asking for context, feedback or clarification without treating questions as proof of inadequacy.

Build Stability While Things Are Moving

3 hours and longer
  • Keep a few anchors consistentParticipants identify routines, relationships or practices that can remain stable while other parts of work are changing.
  • Build a support map for the new stageParticipants identify who can provide role context, practical help, perspective, encouragement or professional support and distinguish the purpose of each relationship.
  • Protect recovery during the learning curveParticipants identify where the transition is creating extra cognitive and emotional demand and protect realistic recovery around that period.
  • Create a simple weekly check-inParticipants build a short weekly review covering what is becoming clearer, what still feels difficult, what they learned and what support they need next.

Move Forward Without Needing Every Answer

Full day only
  • Focus on the next useful stepParticipants identify the decision or action that matters now rather than trying to solve the whole career transition at once.
  • Allow some uncertainty to remainParticipants identify questions that cannot yet be answered and practice moving forward without forcing premature certainty.
  • Review without constantly rejudging the decisionParticipants create sensible review points for evaluating how the transition is going rather than asking every difficult day whether they made the wrong choice.
  • Build your transition planParticipants combine current priorities, learning needs, confidence supports, recovery and review points into a practical transition plan.
