About this session
Medicines can support health, manage symptoms and prevent complications, but everyday mistakes can reduce their effectiveness or cause avoidable harm.
Missed doses, duplicated ingredients, interactions, unclear instructions, poor storage and sharing medicines with others are common risks.
In this practical session, participants explore how to use prescription, over-the-counter and complementary medicines more safely.
The facilitator guides them through labels, patient information leaflets, timing instructions, common interaction risks and the questions worth asking before starting or combining products.
Participants also learn how to prepare for travel, shift work and changing routines, keep an accurate medicines list and respond appropriately to side effects or dosing mistakes. The session does not provide individual medication advice or recommend changing prescribed treatment.
This session provides general medication-safety education. It does not tell participants whether to start, stop, increase, reduce or replace any medicine and does not provide individualized advice about missed doses, interactions or side effects.
Participants should follow the instructions supplied with their medicine and contact a pharmacist, prescriber or appropriate healthcare service when advice is unclear.
Suspected overdose, severe allergic reaction, breathing difficulty, collapse or other rapidly developing serious symptoms require urgent help.
