About this session

Energy and utilities handling includes more than lifting a neat box from the floor.

Workers move cables, transformers, cabinets, tools, and plant components across poles, trenches, substations, vessels, stairs, and restricted openings — often under live operational constraints, isolations, and weather.

Weight may be awkward, grip poor, and the destination unfinished. This session uses task, individual, load, and environment thinking without reducing safety to bend-your-knees slogans.

Participants assess the whole operation, choose mechanical aids, plan staging and routes, and coordinate team lifts with one clear lead. They also define stop-work boundaries for changing weather, blocked access, unstable loads, unavailable equipment, or lost communication.

Supervisors learn where procurement, vehicle layout, access planning, and outage sequencing must change the task itself.

What your people take away

  • Assess each handling operation across task, load, person, and environment
  • Plan stable routes, staging points, grips, and destinations before movement
  • Select suitable mechanical aids and verify safe operating conditions
  • Coordinate team handling with clear commands, roles, and stop signals
  • Recognize when changing conditions require reassessment or stop-work action
  • Redesign deliveries, storage, access, and interfaces to reduce handling

What’s covered

Understand What Makes a Lift Physically Demanding

Every length
  • Weight is only part of the loadThe session begins by exploring why cables, tools, cabinets, components and plant equipment can be difficult to handle even when their weight seems manageable.
  • Reach, height and working positionThe group examines how low-level lifts, overhead placement, restricted openings, stairs, trenches and awkward access change the way the body has to work.
  • Carrying distance and repeated handlingParticipants explore how repeated short carries, repositioning, temporary set-downs and moving tools between field or plant locations can create cumulative fatigue.
  • Early signs of handling strainAttendees consider changes such as increasing fatigue, aching, reduced grip, stiffness, loss of control or discomfort that persists longer than expected.

Reduce Physical Effort With Better Handling Choices

Every length
  • Bring the load closer to the bodyParticipants explore how reducing reach distance and avoiding prolonged holding away from the body can lower physical demand where the task allows.
  • Use mechanical assistance when it helpsThe group considers carts, hoists, winches, lifting devices, dollies and other approved aids that can reduce carrying, lifting or sustained holding.
  • Share loads clearlyAttendees explore when coordinated team handling may be appropriate for long, unstable or awkward materials.
  • Know when a different method is neededParticipants consider when poor grip, unstable footing, inaccessible placement, insufficient space or unavailable assistance means the task needs to be reconsidered.

Manage Fatigue During Field, Plant and Outage Work

Half day only
  • Physical demand changes under pressureThe session explores how outages, emergency work, weather, delayed access and long shifts can increase the amount of handling performed in a shorter period.
  • Grip and upper-body fatigueThe group examines how prolonged gripping, tool carrying, cable handling and repeated stabilization can fatigue the hands, forearms, shoulders and upper back.
  • Lower-body and whole-body fatigueAttendees consider the combined effect of carrying over uneven ground, stairs, platforms, trenches or long field routes.
  • Build recovery between demanding tasksParticipants explore short opportunities to release grip, change position and reduce sustained physical loading between jobs.

Respond Early and Protect Longer-Term Musculoskeletal Health

Half day only
  • Report functional change clearlyParticipants explore how to describe what has changed during handling work, including grip, carrying tolerance, lifting confidence, balance, reach or the ability to control equipment.
  • Know when to pauseThe group considers when increasing pain, weakness, numbness, loss of control or significant fatigue means the task should be reassessed rather than pushed through.
  • Separate personal technique from workplace controlsAttendees explore which changes individuals may be able to make and which require equipment, staffing, access or supervisory support.
  • Learn from recurring handling problemsThe session closes by looking at repeated strain concerns across cables, tools, components or particular locations as useful wellbeing information.
