About this session

Dock and despatch handling includes more than lifting a box from the floor. Goods-in, outbound, and yard teams move totes, cages, cartons, pallets, and mixed SKUs across pick aisles, mezzanines, dock plates, trailers, and shared MHE routes.

Weight may be unknown, grip poor, and the destination unfinished.

This session uses the NIOSH lifting framework and the TILE approach—task, individual, load, and environment—without reducing safety to “bend your knees” or “keep your back straight.” Participants assess the whole operation, choose mechanical aids, plan staging and routes, and coordinate team lifts with one clear lead.

They also define stop-work boundaries for blocked access, unstable loads, unavailable equipment, or lost communication. Supervisors learn where procurement, delivery planning, housekeeping, pace, and contractor coordination must change the task itself.

What your people take away

  • Assess each handling operation across task, load, person, and environment
  • Plan stable routes, staging points, grips, and destinations before movement
  • Select suitable mechanical aids and verify their safe operating conditions
  • Coordinate team handling with clear commands, roles, and stop signals
  • Recognize when changing conditions require reassessment or stop-work action
  • Redesign deliveries, storage, access, pace, and interfaces to reduce handling

What each length covers

90 minutes

Covers 2 of 4 parts: Assess the Whole Handling Operation and Use Equipment and Team Handling Well.

Half day

Covers all 4 parts.

What’s covered

Assess the Whole Handling Operation

Every length
  • Understand the load before it movesThe session begins by exploring the characteristics that can make warehouse loads difficult to handle, including weight, dimensions, stability, shifting contents, center of gravity, damaged packaging and limited handholds.
  • Read the complete routeThe group examines the journey from pickup to final set-down, including dock plates, trailer floors, aisle congestion, slopes, thresholds, doors, staging areas and shared MHE routes.
  • Consider reach, distance and frequencyParticipants explore how starting height, reach distance, carrying or pushing distance, handling frequency, pace and placement accuracy influence physical demand.
  • Know when conditions have changedAttendees consider how congestion, spillages, damaged pallets, displaced stock, unavailable equipment, changing trailer conditions or unexpected vehicle and pedestrian activity can alter an otherwise planned movement.

Use Equipment and Team Handling Well

Every length
  • Choose the right mechanical assistanceParticipants compare pallet trucks, carts, dollies, carts, lifting tables, hoists, vacuum lifters and other handling equipment that may be available within warehouse and dock operations.
  • Recognize when an aid creates new demandsThe group examines how equipment intended to reduce lifting can introduce pushing and pulling forces, trapping points, unstable movement, difficult steering or additional handling at either end of the journey.
  • Understand coordinated team handlingAttendees explore when a load may require coordinated handling by more than one person and what makes that movement more complex.
  • Communication during shared movementThe session looks at the role of clear leadership, agreed commands and stop signals when people are moving awkward, long, flexible or vision-obscuring loads together.

Design Safer Dock and Handling Work

Half day only
  • Reduce unnecessary manual movementThe group explores how delivery planning, pallet configuration, carton size, storage position, staging and equipment availability can reduce unnecessary lifting, carrying, pushing and repositioning.
  • Plan staging and storage around flowAttention turns to where freight is unloaded, staged, broken down, stored and eventually moved next.
  • Keep shared routes workableParticipants consider how goods-in, despatch, picking, replenishment, forklift activity, pedestrian movement and vehicle loading compete for space around docks and warehouse routes.
  • Understand the effect of pace and capacityThe session examines how late arrivals, dispatch deadlines, backlog, staffing levels, equipment shortages and sudden volume increases can change the way loads are handled.

Handle Changing Loads, Trailers and Dock Conditions

Half day only
  • Work with changing load heightsParticipants explore how handling changes as freight moves between floor level, pallets, cages, dock height and different positions inside a trailer.
  • Understand trailer and container conditionsThe group considers the particular challenges of working inside trailers and containers, including restricted space, limited turning room, uneven or damaged flooring, tightly packed freight and reduced visibility.
  • Deal with unstable and mixed freightAttention turns to leaning stacks, damaged cartons, loose items, mixed-SKU pallets, shifting contents and loads whose stability changes as surrounding freight is removed.
  • Connect the dock to the wider operationThe session closes by looking at how inbound scheduling, loading plans, pallet build, replenishment needs, despatch priorities and equipment availability shape handling at the dock.
