About this session

A desk does not need to look obviously uncomfortable to create unnecessary effort.

A screen that is difficult to read can pull the body forward, a mouse placed too far away can create repeated reaching, and a chair adjusted around the desk rather than the person can create new problems somewhere else.

This session gives participants a simple way to reset an everyday workspace. They learn how the chair, desk, screen, keyboard, mouse and frequently used items fit together, then apply the same principles to laptops, shared desks, home workspaces and sit-stand setups.

The goal is not one perfect posture. Participants learn to create a supportive starting position, make useful changes during the day and recognize when the equipment or working arrangement needs something more than a personal adjustment.

Longer programs turn these principles into repeatable desk-setup habits and clearer equipment-support requests.

What your people take away

  • Reset a desk in a practical order instead of changing equipment randomly
  • Adjust the chair, desk and foot support so they work together
  • Position screens, keyboards, mice and frequently used items around the task
  • Create more workable laptop, shared-desk and hybrid setups
  • Use position and task variation instead of trying to hold one perfect posture all day
  • Recognize when personal adjustments are not enough and prepare a clearer equipment or support request

What’s covered

Start With the Chair, Desk and Space

Every length
  • Set the chair around your body firstParticipants begin with seat height, seat depth, back support and a stable sitting position rather than immediately moving the monitor.
  • Make the desk and chair work togetherDesk height can limit how the chair is adjusted.
  • Keep legroom and the immediate space usableStorage boxes, bags, computer equipment and other items beneath a desk can restrict comfortable leg position and make it harder to change posture.
  • Know when the furniture itself is the limitSome workstations cannot be adjusted into a usable arrangement with the equipment available.

Set Up Screens, Keyboard, Mouse and Everyday Reach

90 minutes and longer
  • Place the main screen around the viewing taskParticipants position the screen so the main content can be viewed comfortably without repeated leaning or sustained head turning.
  • Keep the keyboard and mouse within easy reachRepeated reaching for a mouse or working around papers, cups and other objects can increase unnecessary arm and shoulder effort.
  • Organize frequently used items around real usePhones, documents, notebooks, scanners and other items should reflect how often they are used.
  • Reduce glare and unnecessary visual effortReflections, bright windows, low contrast and small text can encourage leaning, squinting or awkward screen positions.

Make Laptops, Shared Desks and Hybrid Work More Usable

3 hours and longer
  • Recognize the laptop trade-offA laptop connects the screen and keyboard, so changing one position changes the other.
  • Reset a shared desk before starting focused workHot desks inherit the previous user's settings.
  • Use simple principles across home and officeHybrid work may involve a full office workstation on one day and a smaller home setup on another.
  • Use sit-stand equipment for variation, not a standing targetA height-adjustable desk can make position changes easier, but standing continuously can also become tiring.

Keep the Setup Working Through the Day

Full day only
  • Use a good starting position without trying to freeze itA supportive setup creates a useful starting point, but the body is not intended to remain completely still throughout a working day.
  • Build changes into existing workday momentsPosition changes are easier to remember when connected with natural transitions such as finishing a meeting, completing focused work or returning from a break.
  • Respond to recurring discomfort without self-diagnosingRecurring aching, tingling, numbness, weakness or visual difficulty can be reasons to review the setup and raise a concern.
  • Ask for the support the setup actually needsA clearer equipment request connects the problem with the task: what is difficult, what has already been adjusted and what limitation remains.
