About this session

Floor respiratory risk shifts as pick faces and pack benches, materials, ventilation, and neighboring processes change.

Diesel exhaust, dusty stock, damaged or leaking goods, battery charging emissions, cleaning products, and trailer atmospheres can cause serious harm even when contamination is not visible or noticeable by smell.

Guided by the NIOSH hierarchy of controls, participants plan elimination, substitution, isolation, local extraction, wet methods, and safer housekeeping before relying on respiratory protective equipment.

They examine RPE selection, fit testing, face-seal limits, health surveillance, symptom reporting, incidents, and reporting and escalation routes.

The multi-week format helps teams test controls across peak periods and layout changes while supervisors use competent occupational-hygiene assessment when hazards or exposures remain uncertain.

What your people take away

  • Identify dock and floor processes that generate hazardous dusts, fumes, vapors, and mists
  • Apply source controls and wet or extracted methods before relying on RPE
  • Verify controls across changing pick faces and pack benches and nearby process activities
  • Stop work and escalate when materials, permits, or controls are uncertain
  • Report respiratory symptoms, exposure incidents, and failed controls promptly
  • Escalate uncertain exposures for competent occupational-hygiene assessment

What’s covered

Understand What Is in Warehouse Air

Every length
  • Dust, exhaust, fumes, vapors and mistsThe session begins by exploring the different airborne hazards that may be present around docks, trailers, battery areas, packaging processes, maintenance work, damaged goods, cleaning products and vehicle routes.
  • How exposure happensThe group examines how airborne contaminants move from their source into surrounding work areas.
  • Different sources create different risksParticipants consider emissions from diesel or LPG equipment, dusty stock, cardboard handling, damaged powders, battery charging, spills, cleaning products and maintenance activities.
  • The limits of sight and smellAttendees examine why visible dust or noticeable odor can provide useful clues without confirming whether an exposure is safe.

Control Emissions Before They Spread

90 minutes and longer
  • Control the source firstParticipants explore the hierarchy of controls through warehouse-specific examples such as reducing unnecessary engine idling, changing a product or process, isolating a source, capturing emissions and separating people from higher-exposure activities.
  • Match the control to the hazardThe group compares approaches for dock exhaust, damaged powders, cardboard and label dust, battery areas, cleaning chemicals, maintenance emissions and trailer contaminants.
  • Housekeeping and airborne exposureAttendees examine how cleaning methods can either reduce or increase airborne contamination.
  • Coordinate work across shared areasParticipants explore how cleaning, maintenance, vehicle activity, damaged goods handling and other tasks can affect people working nearby.

Use Respiratory Protection Within a System

3 hours and longer
  • RPE must match the hazardThe session explores why masks and respirators are not interchangeable or universal solutions.
  • Fit, condition and compatibilityThe group examines common factors that can compromise respiratory protection, including poor fit, facial hair, damaged straps, unsuitable filters, incompatible eyewear and contaminated storage.
  • RPE does not replace source controlParticipants consider the relationship between respiratory protection and wider workplace controls.
  • Responsibility for a managed programAttendees explore the different responsibilities involved in respiratory protection, including access to safety information, competent selection, fit testing, replacement stock, training, exposure monitoring and procedures for equipment failure.

Recognize, Report and Escalate Air Concerns

Full day only
  • Spot signs that controls may be failingParticipants explore warning signs such as visible emissions escaping capture, unusual odors, repeated dust deposits, damaged ventilation, recurring irritation or symptoms associated with a particular task or location.
  • Report what was observedThe group examines the information that makes an air-quality report useful, including the suspected source, location, duration, people affected, ventilation or equipment status, symptoms and any immediate actions already taken.
  • Know when the response becomes urgentAttention turns to situations such as sudden breathing difficulty, collapse, severe wheeze, confusion, suspected oxygen deficiency, significant chemical release or several people becoming rapidly unwell.
  • Turn recurring air concerns into preventionThe session closes by exploring how repeated dust, exhaust, ventilation or symptom concerns can inform wider improvements.
