About this session
Working at height is not limited to roofs or very tall structures. A person can be seriously injured by falling from a platform, mezzanine, vehicle, temporary work surface, ladder, opening or other elevated position.
The first prevention decision is therefore whether the task needs to expose someone to a fall at all.
Participants learn a practical hierarchy for height work: avoid the exposure where possible, prevent a fall through safer access and collective protection, and use personal fall-protection systems only where appropriate within a properly planned system.
The course examines edges, openings, fragile surfaces, ladders, scaffolds, elevated work platforms and other access methods without treating them as interchangeable.
The longer programs move beyond individual equipment into the complete work system. Participants consider access, ground conditions, weather, dropped objects, contractors, inspections, changing scope and emergency readiness.
The emphasis is on planning the work so people are not dependent on last-second reactions or personal protective equipment to survive a preventable fall.
What your people take away
- Recognize where work creates a fall-from-height risk, including less obvious edges, openings and fragile surfaces
- Apply an avoid → prevent → protect approach before selecting personal fall-protection equipment
- Understand how ladders, scaffolds, platforms and elevated work equipment differ in suitability and required competence
- Recognize why guardrails, covers, safe access and other collective controls are preferred where practicable
- Identify changing weather, ground, access and task conditions that should pause or stop work
- Understand why rescue and emergency arrangements must be considered before fall-protection work begins

What each length covers
30 minutes
30 Minutes — Key Points: Recognize the Height Hazard Before Work BeginsA focused 30-minute session on three key points from Recognize the Height Hazard Before Work Begins: look beyond roofs and tall structures, ask whether the work can stay on the ground and identify edges, openings and fragile surfaces.
- Look beyond roofs and tall structures
- Ask whether the work can stay on the ground
- Identify edges, openings and fragile surfaces
Covers 3 of 4 points in Recognize the Height Hazard Before Work Begins.
60 minutes
60 Minutes — Working at Height Safety EssentialsUnderstand where height risk occurs, apply the avoid → prevent → protect hierarchy and recognize the limits of common access and fall-protection equipment. Participants work through representative scenarios and identify when work should stop for a different method or competent review.

What’s covered
Recognize the Height Hazard Before Work Begins
Every length- Look beyond roofs and tall structuresWork at height can include platforms, loading areas, mezzanines, temporary work surfaces, vehicles, open edges, floor openings and other places where a fall could cause injury.
- Ask whether the work can stay on the groundBefore selecting access equipment, participants consider whether the task can be redesigned, assembled at ground level, completed using remote methods or otherwise moved away from the height exposure.
- Identify edges, openings and fragile surfacesUnprotected edges, service openings, skylights, fragile roof materials and incomplete floors can create fall hazards even when the working surface itself appears broad or stable.
- Consider the complete fall eventThe consequences of a fall depend on more than vertical distance.
Choose Safer Access and Prevent the Fall
90 minutes and longer- Prefer collective protection where practicableGuardrails, suitable working platforms, protected openings and other collective measures can protect multiple people without requiring each individual to connect to a system correctly every moment.
- Match the access method to the workA ladder, scaffold, mobile tower and elevated work platform serve different purposes.
- Understand the limits of ladders and step laddersLadders may be appropriate for some short-duration, lower-complexity tasks when they are the suitable access choice and can be used under controlled conditions.
- Check the supporting environmentGround condition, floor strength, slopes, vehicle movement, doorways, overhead hazards and nearby operations can affect otherwise suitable access equipment.
Use Fall Protection Within Its Limits
3 hours and longer- Distinguish restraint from fall arrestA travel-restraint system is intended to prevent the user reaching a fall position.
- Do not treat a harness as a complete systemA harness alone does not prevent or safely arrest a fall.
- Use equipment only with the required competenceScaffolds, mobile towers, elevated work platforms and personal fall-protection systems may require specific training, inspection, authorization or competent supervision depending on the equipment and workplace.
- Control tools and materials above other peopleTools, fixings, components and debris can fall from elevated work.
Plan for Change, Inspection and Emergency Response
Full day only- Check equipment and conditions before useVisible damage, missing components, contamination, altered equipment or unsuitable ground conditions can change whether a planned access system remains usable.
- Stop when weather or work conditions changeWind, rain, ice, poor visibility, heat, electrical storms, ground deterioration, nearby vehicle movement or changed work scope can invalidate the assumptions behind the original plan.
- Coordinate contractors, access and simultaneous workOne team may install access equipment while another works below or moves equipment through the same area.
- Plan rescue before personal fall protection is usedA person suspended after a fall may require prompt rescue, and the fall-arrest equipment itself does not complete the emergency response.
