About this session
Musculoskeletal symptoms in warehousing plants rarely have one simple cause. Load, repetition, awkward duration, recovery, prior health, stress, and beliefs can all influence pain, while peak periods and layout changes alter exposure from week to week.
This session gives workers and supervisors a practical, evidence-informed framework for responding without catastrophizing symptoms or dismissing them.
Participants examine pain as a protective experience, map demands such as carrying, dock work, replenishment climbs, MHE cab time, pack cycles, and walking routes, and constrained aisles, and select proportionate early actions.
They learn where optional preparation and gradual capacity building can help, and where task redesign, mechanical aids, staffing, sequencing, or clinical assessment are needed.
Clear boundaries protect confidentiality and keep diagnosis, rehabilitation, restrictions, and return-to-work decisions with appropriately qualified professionals.
What your people take away
- Explain why pain intensity and tissue damage do not always match
- Identify physical and organizational exposures as warehousing phases change
- Select proportionate early responses to new or changing symptoms
- Report functional concerns clearly without diagnosing or minimizing them
- Distinguish self-management, floor modification, and clinical assessment boundaries
- Support suitable work within documented rehabilitation and return-to-work guidance

What’s covered
Make Sense of Pain Signals
Every length- Pain literacy without dismissalThe session begins by exploring pain as a protective experience influenced by tissue signals, previous experience, sleep, stress, workload and perceived threat.
- Normal responses and concerning changesThe group considers the difference between short-term soreness after unfamiliar or demanding work and symptoms that are severe, worsening, persistent or associated with significant changes in strength, sensation or function.
- Avoidance, pushing through and the middle groundParticipants explore why both complete avoidance of movement and repeatedly pushing through significant symptoms can create problems.
- Describing symptoms clearlyAttendees examine practical ways to describe when symptoms began, where they are felt, what makes them better or worse and how they affect normal warehouse tasks.
Understand How Warehouse Work Affects the Body
Every length- Map demands across the shiftParticipants explore the different physical demands created by picking, packing, replenishment, dock work, cage movement, pallet handling, MHE driving and long walking routes.
- Reach, grip, load and repetitionThe group examines how repeated reaching, gripping scanners, handling cartons, low and high picks, pushing equipment and frequent changes of direction can affect different parts of the body.
- Static load and limited movementParticipants consider less obvious sources of musculoskeletal demand, including prolonged standing, extended MHE cab time, fixed pack-bench positions and restricted movement in congested aisles or workstations.
- Early response when demand changesAttendees consider proportionate responses when discomfort or function begins to change, including modifying exposure, varying tasks, taking available recovery, reporting concerns and following workplace assessment processes.
Modify Work and Support Recovery
90 minutes and longer- Change the task before blaming the bodyThe session examines how stock location, working height, material presentation, handling distance, equipment access and workflow design can influence musculoskeletal demand.
- Use equipment and layout to reduce demandThe group explores how carts, pallet trucks, lifting tables, adjustable pack stations, better stock placement and other workplace controls can reduce unnecessary effort.
- Task variation and recoveryParticipants consider how moving between different warehouse duties can either reduce or simply redistribute physical demand.
- Preparation and capacity buildingThe group explores the appropriate role of optional warm-ups, general strength, conditioning and gradual increases in physical capacity.
Manage Symptoms, Support Recovery and Return to Work
Half day only- Report changes earlyParticipants explore how early reporting can focus on what has changed, which tasks are affected and how normal function has been altered.
- Understand workplace and clinical rolesThe group examines the difference between workplace support and clinical care.
- Support suitable workAttendees consider how temporary changes to picking, packing, walking, MHE driving, replenishment or manual handling may support continued work or return to work when appropriate.
- Review and adapt as things changeThe session closes by exploring why musculoskeletal support should be reviewed as symptoms, work demands and recovery change.
