About this session

Gases, Dust, Fume & Confined-Space Air is a 60-minute to half-day respiratory safety training for energy and utility crews exposed to gases, fumes and dust in plants, fields and confined spaces. It runs live online or in person.

Crews learn to recognize respiratory exposures, put source and engineering controls first, and understand what respiratory protection can and can't do.

It supports, and doesn't replace, your site's confined-space permits, gas testing procedures, fit testing and required training.

Crews leave with a clearer view of the exposures in their work and the habits that keep air safe to breathe. Breathing symptoms should be discussed with occupational health or a doctor.

What your people take away

  • Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work
  • Prioritize source and engineering controls first
  • Understand respiratory protection selection, fit and limits
  • Follow permits and gas testing for confined spaces
  • Report symptoms and exposures early

30 Minutes — Key Points: Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work

A focused 30-minute session on the essentials of Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work: know the main exposures, map exposures in your tasks and know the early signs.

  • Know the main exposures
  • Map exposures in your tasks
  • Know the early signs

Covers Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work, in brief.

60 minutes

Spot exposures and control them

Crews recognize gas, dust and fume exposures in their work and learn why source and engineering controls come first. They identify controls for their own tasks.

  • Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work
  • Prioritize source and engineering controls first
  • Live Q&A

Covers 1 of 4 parts: Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work.

90 minutes

Use respiratory protection well

Adds choosing the right respiratory protection, why fit testing matters and where protection stops working. Crews check their own equipment against their tasks.

  • Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work
  • Prioritize source and engineering controls first
  • Understand respiratory protection selection, fit and limits
  • Live Q&A

Covers 2 of 4 parts: Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work and Prioritize source and engineering controls first.

3 hours

Covers 3 of 4 parts: Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work, Prioritize source and engineering controls first and Understand respiratory protection selection, fit and limits.

Full day

Plan for confined-space air

Adds confined-space air hazards, permits, gas testing and rescue planning, plus reporting symptoms. Crews leave with clear stop rules for their work.

  • Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work
  • Prioritize source and engineering controls first
  • Understand respiratory protection selection, fit and limits
  • Plan for confined-space air
  • Live Q&A

Covers all 4 parts.

What’s covered

Recognize respiratory exposures across energy and utility work

Every length
  • Know the main exposuresCrews identify common exposures such as toxic or flammable gases, silica and other dusts, welding fume and low oxygen.
  • Map exposures in your tasksTeams list where each exposure appears in their own tasks, from cutting and welding to entering vaults.
  • Know the early signsCrews learn warning signs like headaches, dizziness or breathing changes that mean leaving the area.

Prioritize source and engineering controls first

90 minutes and longer
  • Start with the sourceCrews explore how removing, substituting or enclosing the source reduces exposure for everyone.
  • Use ventilation and wet methodsTeams look at extraction, forced ventilation and wet cutting as everyday controls.

Understand respiratory protection selection, fit and limits

3 hours and longer
  • Match protection to the hazardCrews learn why different hazards need different respirators, filters or supplied air.
  • Get the fit rightParticipants learn why fit testing, facial hair and correct wearing affect protection.
  • Know where protection stopsCrews learn that filtering respirators don't protect in low-oxygen or unknown atmospheres.

Plan for confined-space air

Full day only
  • Never enter without a permitCrews review why confined-space entry needs a permit, gas testing and continuous monitoring.
  • Plan rescue before entryTeams learn why rescue is planned in advance and why untrained colleagues must never go in after someone.
  • Report symptoms and exposuresCrews know how to report exposures and when symptoms should be checked by occupational health.
