About this session
Workplace relationships can have a major impact on how people experience their job.
Good relationships can provide trust, support and smoother collaboration, while strained relationships can create tension, distraction, self-doubt and the feeling of having to constantly manage another person's mood or behavior.
This session helps participants understand the patterns shaping their working relationships. They identify where expectations are unclear, where assumptions are replacing direct communication and where repeated tension is creating emotional strain.
The focus is not on making everyone like each other, but on creating relationships that are respectful, workable and clear enough to support the job.
Participants then practice addressing small tensions before they grow, communicating needs and boundaries, repairing misunderstandings and knowing when a relationship issue needs formal support rather than another informal conversation.
The final module focuses on building healthier relationship habits that protect both collaboration and personal wellbeing over time.

What’s covered
Understand the Relationship Pattern
Every length- Identify what keeps repeatingParticipants identify recurring patterns such as miscommunication, unmet expectations, defensiveness, avoidance or unequal effort and focus on what happens repeatedly rather than one isolated difficult interaction.
- Separate observation from interpretationParticipants distinguish what the other person actually did from conclusions such as 'they do not respect me' or 'they are difficult.' They identify where more information is needed before treating an interpretation as fact.
- Notice your own contributionParticipants examine how their communication, assumptions, avoidance or boundaries may be affecting the relationship without taking responsibility for everything.
- Identify the emotional costParticipants identify whether the relationship is creating anxiety, frustration, resentment, overthinking or loss of confidence and notice how much mental space it occupies outside the actual interaction.
Clarify Expectations and Boundaries
90 minutes and longer- Make working expectations explicitParticipants identify assumptions around response times, ownership, decision-making or communication and practice making those expectations visible.
- Clarify roles and ownershipParticipants identify where unclear responsibility is creating tension, duplication or resentment and practice clarifying who owns the task, decision or follow-up.
- Set boundaries without making them personalParticipants practice communicating limits around availability, workload, communication or emotional responsibility in a way that focuses on what is workable rather than presenting the boundary as punishment or rejection.
- Ask rather than assumeParticipants practice checking preferences and expectations directly instead of repeatedly guessing what the other person wants.
Handle Tension and Repair
3 hours and longer- Address tension while it is still smallParticipants practice raising low-level strain before it becomes a major conflict by naming the specific issue and asking for a conversation.
- Own your part specificallyParticipants identify any behavior, wording or impact they genuinely want to take responsibility for and practice specific ownership without turning repair into accepting all the blame.
- Reset the expectationParticipants identify what needs to be different after the conversation and make the revised expectation explicit.
- Know when informal repair is not enoughParticipants distinguish ordinary relationship tension from bullying, harassment, discrimination, threats, retaliation or repeated serious misconduct and recognize when manager, HR or formal workplace routes are more appropriate.
Build Sustainable Working Relationships
Full day only- Build trust through consistencyParticipants identify the everyday behaviors that make relationships more dependable, such as following through, communicating changes and keeping commitments.
- Keep the relationship in proportionParticipants practice preventing one difficult relationship from defining their whole working experience.
- Protect against ruminationParticipants identify when they are replaying interactions without gaining new information and create a stopping point after necessary reflection.
- Know when distance is healthierParticipants recognize that not every workplace relationship needs to become close or warm.
