About this session

Give employees a practical way to connect everyday money decisions with the future they are trying to fund.

This session brings budgeting and financial planning together: what is available now, what is already committed, what needs to be prepared for, and which goals can realistically move forward.

Participants build a financial snapshot, distinguish a monthly spending plan from the timing of money between paydays, and explore budgeting methods they can maintain.

They account for irregular expenses, turn goals into amounts and dates, and test whether competing priorities fit the same available resources. A positive bank balance, a monthly surplus, and money genuinely available for a new goal are treated as different things.

The final stage develops a review process that can respond to changing income, costs, and priorities. Participants learn to investigate differences between the plan and reality, use automation with safeguards, and revise an unrealistic goal without abandoning the whole plan.

Each format ends with an appropriate next step; longer formats build toward a participant-owned financial plan. All exercises can be completed using fictional information, and personal financial documents remain private.

What’s covered

Build a Clear Picture of Your Finances

Every length
  • Start with money that is actually availableParticipants distinguish gross earnings from take-home income and identify which receipts are dependable, variable, or one-off.
  • See the full cost of current commitmentsParticipants review recurring bills, contractual payments, flexible expenses, and predictable costs that occur less often.
  • Distinguish cash flow from your financial positionParticipants separate income and spending over a period from assets and liabilities at a point in time.
  • Identify the problem the plan needs to solveParticipants distinguish a timing mismatch, an omitted expense, an adjustable spending choice, and a continuing shortfall between income and essential commitments.

Create a Budget That Works Between Paydays

90 minutes and longer
  • Choose a structure you can maintainParticipants compare detailed categories, spending pots, and allocation-based approaches according to the visibility and effort each requires.
  • Put income and commitments on actual datesParticipants place paydays, bills, debt payments, and planned transfers on a cash-flow calendar.
  • Prepare for non-monthly costs before they arriveParticipants identify an upcoming cost, subtract money already reserved for it, and divide the remaining amount across the actual funding opportunities before its due date.
  • Keep spending and payment records consistentParticipants practice separating what was purchased from how it was paid for.

Turn Financial Goals Into a Fundable Plan

3 hours and longer
  • Give each goal a purpose, amount, and dateParticipants turn a broad intention into a goal with an estimated cost, target date, existing earmarked resources, and next review point.
  • Calculate the gap before committing to the targetUsing a no-growth illustration, participants subtract existing earmarked savings from the target and divide the remaining gap by the funding periods available.
  • Test competing goals togetherParticipants examine how several individually reasonable goals can exceed the same available surplus when combined.
  • Connect the budget with the wider financial planParticipants place accessible reserves, debt obligations, protection costs, workplace benefits, and longer-term saving within one planning view.

Review, Adapt & Keep Your Plan Working

Full day only
  • Automate with oversightParticipants identify suitable reminders, bill payments, and transfers that could reduce repeated administration.
  • Investigate the difference between plan and realityParticipants compare planned and actual results, then separate changes in price, timing, income, quantity, or missing categories.
  • Review when life changesParticipants test how a change in employment, working hours, housing, health-related spending, caregiving, or another commitment affects the plan.
  • Build a review routine that is easy to restartParticipants define a brief pay-cycle check, a monthly budget-and-goals review, and a broader periodic planning review.
