About this session

Personality preferences can influence which ways of working feel more natural, but preference is not the same as ability.

Someone may prefer time to reflect before speaking and still become an excellent spontaneous presenter; another person may prefer structure and still learn to operate effectively in highly fluid environments.

The MBTI® framework gives participants a shared language for exploring these differences without treating personality as destiny.

Participants learn about the four preference pairs, consider their reported assessment result, explore examples from their own experience and determine the type description that fits them best.

The emphasis then moves from knowing a four-letter code to applying the insight.

Participants examine how their preferences may influence communication, information processing, decision-making, collaboration, change and problem-solving and practice flexing towards less-preferred approaches when the situation requires it.

The goal is greater self-awareness and behavioral choice — not placing people into fixed boxes.

  • Distinguish personality preference from ability, skill, performance or potential
  • Recognize how different preferences may influence communication, information and decisions
  • Use type awareness to improve collaboration without stereotyping colleagues
  • Develop greater behavioral flexibility when the situation requires a less-preferred approach

Interpreting Your Results Well

90 minutes and longer

Principles for reading results

  • There is no best or ideal MBTI® type.
  • Preference does not measure skill, intelligence, performance or potential.
  • People can and do use behaviors associated with both sides of every preference pair.
  • A reported type is part of an interpretive process rather than a verdict that must be accepted automatically.
  • The participant's own experience is central to verifying the type that fits them best.

Use MBTI® Insight Without Putting People in Boxes

3 hours and longer
  • Notice Your PreferenceRecognize the approaches that tend to feel most natural in communication, information gathering, decisions and planning.
  • Understand the DifferenceExplore why another person's preferred approach may look different without interpreting that difference as lower commitment, intelligence or competence.
  • Flex DeliberatelyUse less-preferred behaviors when the situation requires them rather than treating personality type as a reason that a particular behavior is impossible.
  • Build Better Working AgreementsTranslate type awareness into practical expectations around communication, decisions, meetings, feedback, planning and collaboration.

Using MBTI® With Teams

Full day only

Ground rules for team use

  • Use type to explore communication and working differences rather than predict exactly how individuals will behave
  • Do not assign roles or responsibilities simply because someone has a particular MBTI® type
  • Do not use type to decide who should or should not belong on a team
  • Avoid treating one preference as more professional, strategic, creative or leadership-oriented than another
  • Personal results should not have to become public for someone to participate in team development
