About this session
Gallup research consistently shows that a person's direct manager accounts for 70% of the variance in their engagement — and that the quality of the manager relationship is the most frequently cited factor in both thriving and in mental health deterioration at work.
Despite this, the majority of managers have never been trained to recognize early warning signs of mental health difficulties, to start a supportive conversation without fear of making things worse, or to understand where their professional role ends and clinical responsibility begins.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) — developed by Professor Tony Jorm and Betty Kitchener — provides the evidence-based framework that closes this gap.
This session uses the MHFA model alongside duty-of-care principles and the Business in the Community (BITC) Line Manager Mental Health Survey findings to give managers a practical, confidence-building skill set.
What your people take away
- Understand the evidence for manager impact: why the line manager relationship predicts employee mental health outcomes more strongly than organizational policies or EAP provision alone
- Recognize the behavioral early warning signs that distinguish a team member having a difficult week from one who may be developing a mental health condition
- Apply the ALGEE action plan (Approach, Listen non-judgmentally, Give support and information, Encourage professional help, Encourage other support) — the MHFA framework for having a supportive first conversation without overstepping professional boundaries
- Understand where a manager's responsibility ends and how to create a warm handover to clinical or organizational support resources
- Build a team environment that reduces mental health stigma — the language, behaviors, and management practices that make it safe to speak before crisis point
