About this session
Food labels contain a lot of information, but more information does not always make choosing food easier.
Serving sizes, nutrition panels, ingredient lists, front-of-pack claims, percentages, unfamiliar terminology, and marketing language can make two seemingly similar products surprisingly difficult to compare.
This session gives participants a practical system for reading labels without scrutinizing every number.
They learn where to look first, how to compare similar foods fairly, what serving sizes really tell them, how ingredients are listed, and how claims such as "high protein," "low fat," "no added sugar," "natural," or "whole grain" relate to the information elsewhere on the pack.
The emphasis is on making labels useful rather than turning shopping into a nutrition exam.
Participants practice with everyday foods and learn how to adjust what they look for depending on their own priorities, such as salt, fiber, added sugars, protein, allergens, or overall nutritional quality.

What’s covered
Build Your Quick Label-Reading System
Every length- Start with the product you're actually comparingA nutrition label makes most sense when participants first ask what role the food is intended to play and what similar products they are choosing between.
- Find the comparable numbersParticipants learn the difference between information per serving and standardized values such as per 100 g or 100 ml, depending on the labeling system used locally.
- Choose the nutrients that matter for the decisionNot every number needs equal attention every time someone shops.
- Make a decision without chasing the perfect productOne product may contain more fiber while another contains less salt, and there will not always be a single nutritional winner.
Understand Ingredients, Portions & Nutrition Panels
90 minutes and longer- Read ingredients in the right orderIngredients are generally listed according to their proportion in the product, with the largest contributors appearing earlier in the list.
- Understand what a serving size meansPackage serving sizes may not always match what an individual normally eats or drinks.
- Put sugar information into contextLabels can distinguish sugars in different ways depending on the country and labeling system, while ingredient lists can reveal sweetening ingredients under multiple names.
- Look beyond a single numberA food should rarely be judged entirely by calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, or one other nutrient.
Decode Marketing Claims & Front-of-Pack Messages
3 hours and longer- Understand what nutrition claims do — and don't — tell youTerms such as "high protein," "source of fiber," "reduced fat," and "low salt" may have regulated definitions depending on the market.
- Question the health haloWords such as "natural," "wholesome," "artisan," "superfood," or "plant-based" can influence how healthy a product feels even when they provide limited nutritional information.
- Compare the claim with the labelA product promoted as reduced sugar, high protein, or lower fat may differ from the standard version in several other ways.
- Use front-of-pack systems as a shortcut — not the whole answerTraffic-light systems, nutrition scores, percentage daily values, and other front-of-pack tools can make comparisons faster where they are available.
Use Labels for Your Own Priorities
Full day only- Compare everyday breakfast & lunch foodsParticipants work through examples such as cereal, bread, yogurt, soups, sandwiches, and ready meals.
- Read snack & drink labels more intelligentlySnack bars, flavored drinks, smoothies, energy drinks, and packaged snacks often use strong health or performance messaging.
- Find information for dietary needsPeople managing allergies, intolerances, dietary preferences, or specific nutrition advice may need to look for information beyond the main nutrition panel.
- Build your personal 30-second checkParticipants identify the two or three things most useful for their own everyday shopping and create a repeatable quick-check routine.
