About this session

Secondhand smoke exposure is not limited to someone smoking directly beside another person indoors. It may occur around entrances, loading areas, shared vehicles, outdoor break spaces, hospitality venues, temporary worksites and accommodation used during business travel.

Exposure can be especially difficult when smoking areas are close to doors, windows or air intakes, or when employees feel uncomfortable raising concerns involving colleagues, clients or senior staff.

Some workers may also move between locations with very different smoke-free policies and levels of enforcement.

This practical session helps participants recognize common exposure situations, communicate boundaries respectfully and understand which concerns require workplace action rather than individual negotiation.

It also considers vaping aerosol without treating cigarettes and vaping as identical or overstating what is currently known.

What’s covered

Recognize Where Exposure Is Really Happening

Every length
  • Understand secondhand smokeSecondhand smoke includes smoke released from a burning tobacco product and smoke breathed out by the person using it.
  • Look beyond indoor meeting roomsSmoke may drift into workplaces from entrances, balconies, loading areas, courtyards, open windows and nearby smoking spaces.
  • Include vehicles and temporary workplacesShared cars, vans, taxis, client locations, event venues and business-travel accommodation can create exposure outside the employee's usual workplace.
  • Notice personal patternsSome people experience irritation, coughing, headache, nausea, chest tightness or worsening respiratory symptoms around smoke, while others may notice little immediately.

Communicate Boundaries Without Creating Conflict

90 minutes and longer
  • Make the request about the environmentA smoke-free request is easier to hear when it focuses on the location and exposure rather than judging the person who smokes.
  • Prepare for power differencesEmployees may find it harder to raise concerns with a client, manager, visitor or senior colleague.
  • Avoid forced personal disclosureSomeone should not have to reveal asthma, pregnancy, a respiratory condition or another private health matter before a smoke-free policy is respected.
  • Respond respectfully to colleagues who smokeSmoking and nicotine use can involve habit, dependence, stress and personal circumstances that are not visible to others.

Strengthen Protection Across the Workplace

3 hours and longer
  • Review the location of smoking areasA designated smoking area may still create problems when it is placed beside doors, windows, walkways, waiting areas or ventilation intakes.
  • Separate personal action from workplace actionMoving away, closing a window or changing routes may reduce an immediate exposure, but employees cannot personally redesign entrances, ventilation, vehicles or site rules.
  • Include vaping in shared-space conversationsE-cigarette aerosol is different from tobacco smoke, but it is not simply harmless water vapor and may contain nicotine and other substances.
  • Report repeated exposure clearlyA useful report identifies where exposure occurs, when it happens, how frequently it recurs and which doors, windows, vehicles or work activities are involved.
