About this session
Skin naturally changes with age, hormones, health, medication, work and sun exposure. Most marks, moles and patches are harmless, but a new growth, a changing mole or a sore that does not heal can sometimes need medical assessment, as CDC guidance on skin cancer symptoms notes.
This session helps participants become more familiar with their own skin without encouraging self-diagnosis. They learn how to notice changes in size, shape, color, texture, sensation and healing, including changes in areas that are easy to overlook.
Participants also practice recording useful information and preparing for a healthcare appointment.
The aim is to reduce both unnecessary panic and prolonged delay by giving people a clear, practical route from noticing something unusual to seeking appropriate professional advice.
What your people take away

- Use a consistent method to observe moles, marks, patches and sores
- Track change over time with clear notes and photographs where appropriate
- Check less visible areas without relying on memory alone
- Know when to arrange routine, prompt or urgent medical support

What’s covered
Notice and Record Skin Changes More Clearly
Every length- Learn what “change” can look likeParticipants explore changes in size, shape, border, color, texture, height, sensation and healing.
- Use the ABCDE guide without self-diagnosingParticipants learn the ABCDE prompts—asymmetry, border, color, diameter and evolution—as one structured way to observe a mole.
- Describe the change in specific termsParticipants replace vague phrases such as "it looks strange" with useful observations about when the change appeared, whether it is growing, how it feels and whether it bleeds, crusts, itches or fails to heal.
- Create a simple baseline recordParticipants choose a practical method for noting location, appearance, date and any symptoms.
Check the Whole Skin Picture
90 minutes and longer- Look beyond the most visible areasParticipants plan how to check the scalp, ears, back, backs of the legs, soles, between the toes and other areas that are difficult to see.
- Notice non-mole changesParticipants explore why rough or scaly patches, persistent lumps, wounds that do not heal and recurrent bleeding or crusting also deserve attention.
- Compare with what is normal for youParticipants become familiar with their usual pattern of moles, freckles, scars and pigmentation so that a new or changing area is easier to identify.
- Include skin of every colorParticipants recognize that concerning skin changes can occur on all skin tones and may appear in different colors or less sun-exposed areas.
Decide What to Do Next
3 hours and longer- Arrange a check for new or changing areasParticipants identify new moles, changing existing moles, unexplained growths and persistent areas of concern as reasons to contact an appropriate healthcare professional.
- Do not wait for painParticipants learn that a concerning skin change may be painless.
- Prepare for the appointmentParticipants record when the change began, how it has developed, associated symptoms and relevant sun or treatment history.
- Respond to rapid or significant changeParticipants recognize rapid growth, repeated bleeding, marked color or shape change, significant tenderness or a lesion developing into a lump as reasons for prompt review.
