About this session
Social spending is different from many other parts of a budget because the decision is rarely only about money. An invitation can involve friendship, celebration, belonging, FOMO, tradition, travel, gifts and the feeling that everyone else has already said yes.
A dinner that looks manageable can also grow into transport, drinks, another venue and a ride home, while several individually affordable events can create a very expensive month when they cluster together.
This session helps employees make those decisions without treating enjoyment as a financial problem. Participants map regular social spending, occasional activities and bigger events and learn to price the complete experience rather than only the headline ticket or booking.
They then build an invitation decision process that separates personal affordability from somebody else's spending preferences and explore ways to participate differently when the original plan is more expensive than they want.
The later modules focus on predictable social costs: birthdays, weddings, gifts, festivals, weekends away, hosting and other high-cost periods.
Participants create a forward-looking Social Calendar & Spending Plan, leave room for spontaneity, and build a review rhythm that asks whether the spending actually delivered the connection and enjoyment they wanted — rather than measuring success only by how little they spent.

What’s covered
Build Your Social Spending Map
Every length- Make social spending visible without labeling it wastefulParticipants identify the social activities and experiences that currently use money and distinguish regular plans, occasional activities, bigger events and seasonal clusters.
- Price the full experience — not just the ticket or reservationParticipants learn to look beyond the headline amount and identify transport, food, drinks, clothing, gifts, accommodation, care, optional activities and other costs that can accompany an invitation.
- Distinguish valued social spending from automatic participationParticipants reflect on which experiences they would happily fund again and which plans they mostly accept from habit, expectation or momentum.
- Create a flexible social-spending rangeParticipants build a personal planning range for social activity within the wider financial picture rather than using a universal percentage.
Navigate Invitations, FOMO & Different Budgets
90 minutes and longer- Pause before the group's momentum becomes your financial decisionParticipants learn a simple Invitation Affordability Check that creates enough space to identify the full cost, personal value, other upcoming commitments and available flexibility before saying yes.
- Separate your affordability from someone else's budgetParticipants explore scenarios where friends have different incomes, priorities or willingness to spend and learn why another person's comfort with the price does not determine their own.
- Use partial participation when the experience is not all-or-nothingParticipants identify situations where joining one part of a dinner, event, weekend, celebration or trip can preserve social connection while reducing cost.
- Suggest a different version without turning money into a personal disclosureParticipants practice communicating preferences, spending limits or alternative plans without sharing salary, debt, savings or hardship details.
Plan for Dining, Celebrations, Trips & Hosting
3 hours and longer- Keep everyday social plans from expanding through optional extrasParticipants examine meals, entertainment, nightlife, hobbies and activities and identify the parts of the experience they actually value alongside optional extras such as additional venues, transport changes, upgrades or other spending that can expand the final cost.
- Plan the complete cost of celebrations & giftsParticipants map birthdays, weddings, milestone celebrations and other relevant occasions across the event itself, travel, accommodation, clothing, gifts and related activities.
- Make group trips & weekends an affordability decision before a payment decisionParticipants estimate whether a group trip or weekend fits their social-spending plan and explore shorter attendance or fewer optional activities where appropriate.
- Set the hosting experience before the cost expandsParticipants define the social experience they want to create and map food, drinks, venue, decorations, entertainment, guest count and other relevant costs before spending begins.
Build a Sustainable Social-Life Financial System
Full day only- Map social seasons before several events arrive at onceParticipants create a Social Calendar Cost Map containing known and likely celebrations, weddings, trips, festivals, birthdays, hosting and other personally relevant social events.
- Plan for predictable social costs without calling them emergenciesParticipants can create a planned social reserve for known or reasonably expected higher-cost periods rather than repeatedly using emergency savings for predictable celebrations or trips.
- Preserve room for spontaneityParticipants learn that a social-spending system can include flexible unallocated fun money so an unplanned coffee, meal or event does not automatically represent failure.
- Review whether the spending delivered the social value you wantedParticipants review which experiences they enjoyed, which costs expanded unexpectedly, which plans they would happily repeat and what is coming next.
