About this session

A financial app can look like a bank without legally being a bank. A payment balance can sit with a nonbank company, at a partner bank, or inside another account structure.

Brokerage cash can be held at the broker, swept to one or more banks, or invested in a money-market fund. A single app can also contain payments, credit, investments and crypto — each with different providers and protections.

This session teaches employees how to look behind the interface. Participants begin by distinguishing FDIC-insured banks, federally insured credit unions and nonbank fintechs and learn why a partner-bank relationship does not make the fintech itself FDIC insured.

They then examine payment apps, digital wallets, ACH, wires, P2P transfers and modern instant-payment systems such as FedNow and other real-time rails.

The later modules focus on embedded financial products and account management.

Participants learn how SIPC differs from FDIC / NCUA, decode brokerage cash sweeps and savings features, identify investment / credit / crypto boundaries, review financial-data connections and current U.S. data-sharing rules, and finish with a U.S. Money App Stack Review showing what each app does, who legally provides it, where money or assets are held, which protection applies, what it costs, what data it can access and how the financial relationship can be closed properly.

What your people take away

  • Distinguish an FDIC-insured bank, federally insured credit union and nonbank fintech rather than relying on an app's branding
  • Understand how ACH, wires, P2P payments, digital wallets and instant-payment systems differ at a practical level
  • Distinguish FDIC / NCUA deposit protection from SIPC brokerage protection and understand why stored app balances or brokerage cash require closer review
  • Evaluate fees, savings, investing, crypto, credit and linked-account features without product recommendations
  • Build a U.S. Money App Stack Review covering provider, money / asset location, protection, payment route, fees, data access, support, records and closure

What’s covered

Decode What Your U.S. Financial App Actually Is

Every length
  • Look past the app brand & find the legal providerParticipants learn that digital bank, fintech, wallet, payment app and money app are consumer-facing descriptions rather than complete legal categories.
  • Distinguish banks, credit unions & nonbank fintechsParticipants compare FDIC-insured banks and federally insured credit unions with nonbank fintech companies and learn why a banking-style interface, debit card or routing information does not by itself establish that the app company is an insured depository institution.
  • Understand partner-bank & stored-balance structuresParticipants learn how a nonbank app can place qualifying customer funds at one or more partner banks and why the actual depository institution, deposit records and program terms matter to insurance.
  • Match each product with the protection that actually appliesParticipants distinguish FDIC bank-deposit insurance, NCUA share insurance, nonbank payment balances, brokerage protection and unprotected financial assets.

Understand U.S. Payments, Transfers & Digital Wallets

90 minutes and longer
  • Distinguish ACH, wires, cards, P2P & instant paymentsParticipants compare the major ways money moves electronically in the United States and learn why transfer speed, funding method, fees, dispute process and recipient risk can differ.
  • Understand FedNow without looking for a FedNow appParticipants learn that FedNow is Federal Reserve instant-payment infrastructure available to participating banks and credit unions rather than a consumer app.
  • Distinguish digital wallet, stored balance & payment sourceParticipants learn that a digital wallet can store payment credentials without holding money, while another app can hold stored value or a P2P balance.
  • Understand payment dispute & regulation e boundariesParticipants learn that unauthorized electronic fund transfers can have federal error-resolution and liability protections while consumer-authorized transfers, merchant disputes and scam scenarios can involve different facts.

Evaluate Protection, Fees & Embedded Financial Features

3 hours and longer
  • Distinguish FDIC / NCUA deposit protection from SIPCParticipants learn that FDIC and NCUA protect qualifying depository funds against insured institution failure while SIPC addresses missing cash and securities in qualifying SIPC-member brokerage failures.
  • Find out what brokerage 'cash' actually isParticipants trace uninvested brokerage cash to the structure used by the broker.
  • Decode savings, investment, credit & crypto featuresParticipants identify the actual product and provider behind features marketed as savings, high yield, investing, managed portfolio, crypto, overdraft, advance or installment payment.
  • Compare fees, premium tiers & rewards through total costParticipants compare transfer fees, subscription charges, investment / advisory costs, spreads, ATM costs, instant-transfer charges, international-transfer costs, premium benefits and rewards.

Build a Safer, Clearer U.S. Money App Stack

Full day only
  • Review linked financial accounts & data permissionsParticipants identify which apps or data aggregators can access bank, credit-card, investment or other financial information and review which accounts, data categories and purposes remain necessary.
  • Check support, disputes & what happens if access is restrictedParticipants compare support channels, unauthorized-transaction reporting, formal dispute processes, complaint routes and account-restriction support.
  • Identify duplicate apps, subscriptions & provider dependencyParticipants map the financial job performed by each app and identify duplicated services, forgotten stored balances, unused paid plans, stale linked-account permissions, scattered brokerage or tax records and overdependence on one provider.
  • Close the financial account — do not just delete the appParticipants learn to address remaining balances, investments, crypto where applicable, automatic payments, direct deposit, linked accounts, tax documents, pending transfers and data connections before using the provider's formal closure process.
