About this session
Business communication often contains good information but little narrative. A presentation may include the background, data, recommendations and next steps and still leave the audience unsure what matters most or why they should care.
Storytelling provides a way to organize information around meaning, movement and consequence rather than simply presenting material in the order it was collected.
Participants begin with the audience and the business outcome. They identify what the audience already knows, what matters to them, what they need to understand or decide and the one central message the communication should leave behind.
This prevents the story from becoming an entertaining detour disconnected from the purpose of the work.
They then build narrative structure.
Business stories do not require fictional drama, but they usually need movement: a current situation, something that creates a challenge or opportunity, evidence showing why the status quo matters, a possible change and a credible resolution or next step.
Participants learn how to use examples, cases, comparisons, data and human experience to make that movement easier to understand and remember.
Finally, participants adapt the story to the setting. A senior leadership update, customer case, transformation message, project proposal and team presentation may use the same underlying narrative principles but require different levels of detail, evidence, tone and delivery.
The emphasis throughout is on clarity and credibility rather than theatrical storytelling or manipulation.
