About this session

Skin tone affects how the skin responds visibly to sunlight, but it does not create complete protection from ultraviolet radiation.

Higher levels of melanin can reduce the likelihood of visible sunburn and lower some skin-cancer risks, yet people of every skin tone can experience ultraviolet damage and develop skin cancer, as NHS guidance on sunscreen and sun safety notes.

Sun damage may also be harder to recognize on darker skin when guidance relies only on redness, pinkness or images of lighter complexions.

Warmth, tenderness, tightness, swelling, peeling or a deeper change in color may provide more useful clues, while concerning skin changes can appear brown, black, red, pink, skin-colored or mixed in color, as American Academy of Dermatology guidance on skin of color notes.

This session gives participants a more inclusive understanding of sun safety.

They compare how exposure and skin changes may present across different complexions, practice layered protection and explore sunscreen options without suggesting that everyone needs the same product, appearance or routine.

What’s covered

Make Sun Protection Work for Your Skin

Every length
  • Separate skin tone from complete protectionParticipants explore how melanin can offer some natural protection while still allowing ultraviolet damage to accumulate.
  • Map your real pattern of exposureParticipants identify exposure during commuting, outdoor work, exercise, social activity, driving, travel and time near reflective surfaces.
  • Combine several forms of protectionParticipants create a practical routine using shade, clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen where appropriate.
  • Find the areas most often missedParticipants review the ears, scalp, hairline, neck, lips, shoulders, hands, feet and areas exposed by changing clothing or footwear.

Recognize Sunburn and Choose Products More Confidently

90 minutes and longer
  • Look beyond redness aloneParticipants learn that sunburn may not always appear bright red or pink, particularly on darker skin.
  • Choose a sunscreen you will actually useParticipants compare lotion, cream, gel, stick, spray and tinted options, considering skin feel, residue, facial use, sweating, makeup, facial hair and visibility on different complexions.
  • Apply enough and reapply when neededParticipants practice planning sunscreen use before exposure and recognize why sweating, rubbing, swimming and prolonged time outdoors may require reapplication.
  • Avoid using temperature as the risk testParticipants recognize that ultraviolet radiation can remain relevant during cool, windy or partly cloudy conditions.

Notice Skin Changes Across Every Complexion

3 hours and longer
  • Learn how concerning changes may differ in appearanceParticipants explore how new or changing areas may appear black, brown, red, pink, skin-colored or mixed in color depending on the person and the type of lesion.
  • Check both sun-exposed and less-exposed areasParticipants include the scalp, nails, palms, soles and other less visible areas in skin awareness.
  • Track what is new, changing or not healingParticipants create a simple record of location, date, appearance and symptoms for a mole, mark, patch, lump or sore that concerns them.
  • Challenge unequal assumptions about riskParticipants examine how statements such as "people with dark skin do not need sun protection" or "skin cancer only affects fair skin" can delay prevention and assessment.
