About this session
Sustainable and socially useful innovation begins with a better question than 'How can we make this greener?' or 'How can we create social impact?' Participants first examine the problem, the people and systems affected, the value being created today, and the environmental or social costs that may currently sit outside the organization's immediate view.
They then explore where innovation can create meaningful improvement.
This may involve products, services, processes, business models, sourcing, accessibility, resource use, circularity, employment practices, customer behavior, community outcomes or entirely new ways of meeting an existing need.
The session combines innovation discipline with impact thinking.
Participants learn to distinguish activity from outcome, challenge assumptions about who benefits, anticipate unintended consequences, identify trade-offs, and test whether a promising concept is both impactful and workable.
The objective is not sustainability theater or innovation for novelty's sake — it is creating solutions that deliver credible social or environmental value and can survive in the real world.
What your people take away
- Identify social and environmental challenges where innovation could create meaningful value
- Understand the wider system, stakeholders and consequences surrounding an innovation opportunity
- Generate solutions that consider impact, accessibility, resource use and long-term viability from the beginning
- Turn impact claims into assumptions and outcomes that can be tested
- Balance social, environmental, customer, operational and commercial trade-offs transparently
- Build evidence for what should be improved, scaled, redesigned or stopped

What’s covered
Find the Right Impact Opportunity
Every length- Start with a real need or consequenceStrong impact innovation begins with something that genuinely needs to improve.
- Map who & what is affectedThe customer is rarely the only stakeholder in a sustainability challenge.
- See the system around the problemSocial and environmental challenges are often created by interacting incentives, behaviors, infrastructure, policy, supply chains, norms and resource flows rather than one isolated cause.
- Define the impact you actually wantStatements such as 'improve sustainability' or 'help communities' are too broad to guide useful innovation.
Design Solutions for Sustainable Value
90 minutes and longer- Design impact into the solutionImpact is harder to add after a product, service or process has already been designed around different assumptions.
- Redesign resource flowsMany sustainability opportunities come from reconsidering what is extracted, purchased, used, wasted, transported, repaired, reused or discarded.
- Innovate the model, not just the productSometimes the largest opportunity lies in how value is created and delivered rather than in the physical product itself.
- Design for access & participationA solution can create strong average outcomes while excluding people because of cost, geography, disability, language, digital access, work pattern or other practical barriers.
Test Impact, Viability & Unintended Consequences
3 hours and longer- Turn impact claims into testable assumptionsA solution described as sustainable, inclusive or socially beneficial may still depend on assumptions that have never been demonstrated.
- Look for unintended consequencesSolving one problem can create another.
- Balance impact with viabilityA concept that creates meaningful impact but cannot be funded, operated, adopted or sustained may struggle to produce that impact at useful scale.
- Run the smallest useful experimentTeams do not need to launch a complete program before learning whether an impact hypothesis is credible.
Measure, Scale & Sustain the Impact
Full day only- Distinguish output from outcomeActivities such as participants reached, products distributed, workshops delivered or materials recycled describe what happened, but they do not automatically demonstrate the change created.
- Build an evidence chainImpact claims become stronger when teams can explain why the intervention should create the intended outcome and what evidence supports each important link.
- Scale what creates value — not just what is popularRapid adoption can create the appearance of successful innovation while impact per participant, customer or location weakens as the program expands.
- Keep learning from the systemSocial and environmental conditions change, and the consequences of innovation may become clearer only after implementation.
