About this session

Swiss employee tax planning is unusually local. Income tax can be levied at federal, cantonal and communal level, while cantons and communes also levy wealth tax.

The employee's canton, commune, tax status, family circumstances, professional expenses, pension contributions, investments and assets can therefore materially change the tax picture.

This session first helps participants identify the system that applies to them.

Employees learn the difference between ordinary taxation and Quellensteuer, understand when source taxation can lead to a subsequent ordinary assessment, and use the Swiss salary certificate as the central employment-tax record.

They then build a practical framework for professional expenses, social and personal deductions, employer reimbursements, and canton-specific tax evidence.

The later modules examine workplace benefits, social insurance, Pillar 2 and Pillar 3a tax boundaries, Verrechnungssteuer, investment income, private capital gains, wealth tax, property and cross-border complexity.

Participants finish with a Switzerland Tax Planning Calendar that brings together the relevant canton / commune, employment records, deductions, pension documentation, investment / wealth records, tax return, assessments and future tax-law checks without turning tax education into retirement, investment or relocation advice.

What’s covered

  • Distinguish ordinary taxation from QuellensteuerParticipants learn why some employees complete an ordinary cantonal tax return while specified foreign or non-resident employees can have tax deducted directly from salary through Quellensteuer.
  • Use the salary certificate as the employment-tax anchorParticipants learn to identify salary, bonuses, allowances, benefits, pension information and expense reporting on the Lohnausweis / certificat de salaire and to retain a certificate from every relevant employer.
  • Localize the tax position before using detailed rulesParticipants identify canton, commune, ordinary / source-tax status, property, multiple-employer, cross-cantonal and international factors before applying detailed rates or deductions.

Build Your Professional Deduction & Tax Evidence System

90 minutes and longer
  • Use the actual Swiss professional-expense frameworkParticipants examine commuting, additional meal costs, other professional expenses, weekly residence away from home, secondary employment, and related categories using current federal and cantonal rules.
  • Keep remote work, education & reimbursements fact-specificParticipants learn why home-office expenses, professional education, employer-funded training, travel reimbursements, and other work costs can receive different treatment depending on necessity, employer provision, reimbursement, canton, and current law.
  • Distinguish professional deductions from personal & social deductionsParticipants separate work-related deductions from social-insurance, insurance-premium, family / childcare, pension and charitable-donation deductions.
  • Build the evidence while the tax year is happeningParticipants create a Switzerland Tax Evidence System covering employment documents, professional expenses, reimbursements, pension records, insurance, family / childcare evidence where relevant, donations, investments, wealth and property information.

Understand Workplace, Social Insurance & Pension Tax Interactions

3 hours and longer
  • Understand employer benefits without treating every benefit the sameParticipants learn that allowances, vehicles, accommodation, meals, employee equity, employer education and other workplace benefits can receive different tax and salary-certificate treatment depending on their structure and current rules.

  • Understand Pillar 2 & Pillar 3a tax treatment without turning it into retirement adviceParticipants learn how ordinary occupational-pension contributions, qualifying pension-fund buy-ins and Pillar 3a contributions can interact with taxable income.
  • Recognize source-tax & new Pillar 3a administration questionsParticipants learn why a source-taxed employee may need to check subsequent ordinary-assessment rules before assuming a Pillar 3a deduction has been fully recognized and why the new Pillar 3a catch-up contribution framework beginning in 2026 requires eligibility and current-rule verification rather than automatic backfilling.

Manage Investments, Wealth & the Annual Tax Process

Full day only
  • Distinguish investment income, Verrechnungssteuer & private capital gainsParticipants learn why bank interest, dividends and other investment income can be taxable while private gains on movable private assets can receive different income-tax treatment.

  • Treat wealth, property & foreign assets as their own tax layerParticipants identify bank balances, securities, crypto, property and other assets as potential cantonal wealth-tax items and recognize rental property, owner-occupied housing, property gains, cross-cantonal property, foreign property and other assets as issues requiring correct declaration and potentially specialist allocation.
  • Close the year with the cantonal return, assessments & next-year planParticipants review salary certificates, deductions, Pillar 2 / Pillar 3a records, investment income, Verrechnungssteuer, taxable wealth, property, foreign assets, canton-specific filing, assessments and payment follow-through and build a Switzerland Tax Planning Calendar for the next tax year.
