About this session

Singapore employee tax planning is highly streamlined for many employees, but streamlined does not mean automatic in every situation.

Employment income can be submitted directly to IRAS through the Auto-Inclusion Scheme, some taxpayers may be placed under a no-filing or other automated assessment pathway, and personal tax reliefs can be reflected using information already available to IRAS.

Employees still need to understand the Year of Assessment, review the information used in their assessment, identify other income or expenses that have not been captured, and recognize when their circumstances require additional action.

This session builds that understanding from the employee's point of view.

Participants first connect the calendar year in which income is earned with the later Year of Assessment, learn the role of tax residency, identify salary, bonus, commission, allowances and taxable employment benefits, and understand how AIS, filing requirements, myTax Portal and the Notice of Assessment fit together.

The later modules focus on allowable employment expenses, personal tax reliefs, CPF and SRS tax boundaries, benefits in kind, investments, rental income and other complexity triggers.

Participants learn why a CPF top-up, SRS contribution, donation, investment or employment expense should never be undertaken merely because tax relief may exist and leave with a Singapore Tax Planning Calendar that keeps income, evidence, relief questions, filing, assessment and future tax changes visible throughout the year.

What’s covered

Understand Your Singapore Income Tax Position

Every length
  • Connect the calendar year with the year of assessmentParticipants learn why Singapore generally assesses income on a preceding-year basis and distinguish the calendar year in which employment income is earned from the later Year of Assessment in which that income is assessed.
  • Understand employment income beyond base salaryParticipants identify salary, bonus, commission, allowances, accommodation, benefits in kind, employer-paid personal expenses, and employment-related equity as potential employment-income categories under current rules.
  • Understand AIs, filing & automated assessment pathwaysParticipants learn how employer Auto-Inclusion can pre-fill employment income, why AIS does not by itself determine whether an employee needs to file, and how No-Filing Service or another current automated assessment route can simplify administration while still requiring the employee to review the information used.
  • Keep tax residency as a separate gateway questionParticipants learn why tax residency can affect rates, personal-relief eligibility, foreign-employment questions and non-resident treatment.

Build Your Employment Expense, Relief & Evidence System

90 minutes and longer
  • Test employment expenses before claiming themParticipants evaluate supplied employee costs by asking whether the expense was incurred in producing Singapore employment income, was wholly and exclusively connected with that income, was personally borne, was reimbursed, is private or capital in nature, and can be supported by appropriate records.
  • Handle working-from-home & reimbursed costs carefullyParticipants examine incremental household costs, shared bills, employer reimbursements and supplied hybrid-work scenarios and learn why working from home does not automatically make rent, mortgage, utilities or every household expense deductible.
  • Distinguish personal reliefs, donations, rebates & lapsed reliefsParticipants learn why personal reliefs, donation deductions and tax rebates affect the tax calculation differently and why eligibility depends on the current Year of Assessment.
  • Build the record before tax seasonParticipants create a Singapore Tax Evidence System covering allowable employment-expense records, working-from-home evidence, employer reimbursement information, other income documentation and records needed to investigate relief or donation questions.

Understand CPF, SRS & Workplace Benefit Tax Interactions

3 hours and longer
  • Understand CPF tax relief without turning it into a contribution recommendationParticipants learn why qualifying compulsory employee CPF contributions and specified other CPF / MediSave contributions can receive tax relief under current rules.
  • Keep CPF cash top-up relief separate from the retirement decisionParticipants learn that qualifying CPF cash top-ups can receive relief subject to recipient, account, retirement / healthcare limits, current matching-grant rules and annual relief limits.
  • Understand SRS tax relief without turning it into investment adviceParticipants learn why qualifying SRS contributions can receive tax relief for eligible tax residents, why employer SRS contributions can have employment-income consequences, and why withdrawals have separate tax treatment.
  • Understand taxable workplace benefits & accommodationParticipants learn that gains and benefits received because of employment can be taxable unless specifically exempt or covered by a concession.

Manage Investments, Other Income & the Full Year of Assessment

Full day only
  • Distinguish exempt investment receipts from taxable or business incomeParticipants learn that common categories of Singapore interest and dividends can receive exempt treatment while other receipts can remain taxable and that securities or asset gains require correct capital-versus-income classification.
  • Keep rental income & Property Tax as two separate questionsParticipants learn that net rental income can be subject to Income Tax while property ownership is also governed by a separate Property Tax framework.
  • Recognize equity, business, foreign-Income & Tax-clearance complexityParticipants identify employee equity, freelance or business income, foreign employment or investment income, uncertain tax residency, overseas work and departure / tax-clearance situations as issues that can move beyond ordinary employee tax planning.
  • Close the year with myTax Portal, the tax bill & next-year planningParticipants review pre-filled income, filing / no-filing status, relief information, the Notice of Assessment, amendment routes, payment follow-through and unresolved complexity and build a Singapore Tax Planning Calendar for the next Year of Assessment.
