About this session

Vaping is often discussed in extremes. It may be presented as completely harmless because it does not involve burning tobacco, or treated as though it carries exactly the same risks as cigarette smoking. Neither framing gives employees the balanced information they need.

Most vapes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure.

E-cigarette aerosol may also expose users to substances including fine particles, metals and other chemicals, while the long-term cardiovascular consequences of vaping are still being studied.

For an adult who smokes cigarettes, switching completely to a regulated nicotine vape is generally considered substantially less harmful than continuing to smoke because vaping does not produce tobacco tar or carbon monoxide.

It is still not risk-free, and using cigarettes and vapes together may preserve much of the exposure associated with smoking rather than delivering the benefits of switching completely.

This session helps participants distinguish nicotine from combustion, understand what vaping may do to the cardiovascular system and consider their own pattern of use.

It supports informed decisions without shaming people who vape or undermining vaping's potential role as a smoking-cessation aid for some adults.

The session is educational rather than clinical. It does not prescribe cessation products, assess cardiovascular risk or replace advice from a healthcare professional, pharmacist or specialist stop-smoking service.

What’s covered

Understand What Vaping Delivers

Every length
  • Separate nicotine from tobacco smokeNicotine is the addictive substance that reinforces repeated use, while much of the severe harm from cigarettes comes from inhaling the products of burning tobacco.
  • Notice the immediate cardiovascular responseNicotine activates the body's stress-response system and can temporarily raise heart rate and blood pressure while narrowing blood vessels.
  • Look beyond “water vapor”E-cigarettes create an aerosol rather than harmless water vapor.
  • Understand why the dose can be hard to judgeNicotine delivery differs across devices, liquids, strengths and patterns of inhalation.

Compare Vaping, Smoking and Dual Use

90 minutes and longer
  • Vaping is not the same as smokingVapes do not burn tobacco and therefore do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, two major contributors to smoking-related disease.
  • Less harmful does not mean risk-freeVaping continues to expose users to nicotine and aerosolized chemicals, and its full long-term health effects are not yet known.
  • Dual use can limit the benefitSome people vape in situations where smoking is restricted but continue smoking at other times.
  • Product and use patterns matterDevice temperature, liquid ingredients, product regulation and frequency of use can all affect exposure.

Make a More Informed Nicotine Plan

3 hours and longer
  • Identify the current purpose of vapingOne person may be using a vape to stop smoking, another may be maintaining nicotine use indefinitely and someone else may have started vaping without previously smoking.
  • Avoid returning to cigarettesSomeone who has switched completely from smoking to vaping should not interpret concern about vaping as a reason to resume cigarettes.
  • Prepare for nicotine dependenceFrequent vaping, strong liquids and easy access throughout the working day can reinforce dependence.
  • Use qualified supportHealthcare professionals, pharmacists and specialist stop-smoking services can help people compare cessation options and select an approach suited to their circumstances.
