About this session
The kidneys do far more than produce urine. They filter waste and excess fluid from the blood, help regulate blood pressure and support the body's balance of minerals and other essential processes.
Chronic kidney disease, or CKD, describes abnormalities in kidney structure or function that persist for at least three months and have implications for health.
Early kidney disease often develops without noticeable symptoms. Someone may feel well while changes are already visible through a blood test measuring estimated glomerular filtration rate, or eGFR, and a urine test checking for albumin.
These tests provide different but complementary information about kidney filtration and possible kidney damage.
This session helps participants connect kidney health with blood pressure, blood sugar, medicines, family history and everyday routines.
It supports greater awareness and more confident healthcare conversations without encouraging participants to diagnose kidney disease, interpret one result in isolation or follow a restrictive kidney diet without individualized advice.

What’s covered
Take Practical Steps to Protect Kidney Health
Every length- Check your personal risk pictureParticipants consider whether diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, family history or previous kidney concerns may make screening especially important.
- Support blood pressure and blood-sugar healthParticipants review how meals, movement, smoking, alcohol, sleep, stress and prescribed treatment fit within their current routine.
- Prepare safer questions about medicinesParticipants consider prescription medicines, over-the-counter pain relief, supplements and products used during illness or dehydration.
- Choose one clear next stepParticipants select a practical action such as arranging a health check, recording family history, preparing questions for an appointment or improving consistency with an existing treatment plan.
Connect Kidney Health With Everyday Risk Factors
90 minutes and longer- See how blood pressure and the kidneys affect each otherParticipants explore how high blood pressure can damage the kidneys' filtering system and how reduced kidney function may contribute to further blood-pressure problems.
- Look at the whole food patternParticipants review sodium, highly processed foods, fruit, vegetables, protein sources, alcohol and everyday meal routines without following a universal kidney diet.
- Build movement and cardiovascular support into the weekParticipants identify realistic opportunities for walking, active travel, exercise, strength work or movement breaks.
- Remove workplace barriers where possibleParticipants map medication timing, meals, hydration, movement, appointments and recovery across a typical working week.
Make Sense of Testing and Longer-Term Follow-Up
3 hours and longer- Know what the two main kidney tests checkThe facilitator explains that eGFR is estimated from a blood test and provides information about how effectively the kidneys are filtering.
- View results as a pattern, not a single verdictParticipants learn that CKD involves persistent abnormalities rather than every temporary change in a blood or urine result.
- Prepare for a useful results conversationParticipants create a question set covering what each result means, whether repeat testing is needed, what may have influenced it and what monitoring or treatment is recommended.
- Recognize when symptoms need prompt attentionParticipants learn that early CKD may cause no symptoms, while more advanced problems may involve swelling, changes in urination, breathlessness, nausea, itching or significant fatigue.
