About this session
A colleague does not reply. A manager asks for an unexpected meeting.
A presentation receives less enthusiasm than expected. Within seconds, the mind can move from what happened to what it supposedly means: “They're unhappy with me,” “I've messed this up,” or “This is going to go badly.” Sometimes that interpretation is accurate.
Often, there is still information missing.
Cognitive restructuring is a practical way to slow that process down. Participants learn how to capture the thought that appeared, separate observable facts from interpretation and examine what evidence genuinely supports or challenges the conclusion.
They practice generating credible alternatives without replacing one unsupported story with an artificially positive one.
The session then focuses on building a balanced working perspective: an interpretation that acknowledges real difficulties, uncertainty and responsibility while remaining proportionate to the evidence available.
Participants test their thinking through real-world observation and leave with a short restructuring process they can use when recurring workplace thoughts begin driving unnecessary stress, avoidance or reactive behavior.

- Separate observable facts, interpretations, predictions and judgments
- Test important thoughts against evidence for and evidence against

What’s covered
Catch the Thought Before It Becomes the Story
Every length- Capture the first automatic conclusionParticipants return to a recent workplace trigger and write the first sentence that appeared internally, such as “They're unhappy with me” or “I've ruined this.” They capture the thought as it occurred rather than editing it into something more reasonable before examining it.
- Separate the event from the interpretationParticipants describe what an external observer could actually have seen or heard, then compare that with the meaning they attached to it.
- Identify predictions and global judgmentsParticipants highlight where the thought predicts an outcome, assumes another person's intention or turns one event into a broad conclusion about themselves.
- Notice what the thought makes you doParticipants map the behavioral consequence of believing the thought.
Test the Thought Against the Evidence
90 minutes and longer- Use facts vs interpretationParticipants divide the situation into what is directly known and what has been inferred.
- Build the evidence for and againstParticipants list evidence genuinely supporting the thought and evidence pointing in another direction.
- Separate possibility from probabilityParticipants examine feared outcomes that are possible but not necessarily likely and distinguish “this could happen” from “this is what will happen.” They use previous experience, current evidence and missing information to develop a more proportionate estimate without pretending uncertainty can be eliminated.
- Ask what information would actually settle itParticipants identify whether further thinking is useful or whether the situation requires new information.
Build a Balanced Working Perspective
3 hours and longer- Generate more than one plausible explanationParticipants create two or three explanations that fit the known facts rather than searching immediately for a comforting alternative.
- Keep the difficult evidence in the pictureParticipants build a balanced perspective that does not erase genuine problems.
- Move from global judgment to specific informationParticipants replace broad conclusions such as “I'm bad at this” with the specific behavior, skill or outcome the evidence actually supports.
- Connect the perspective to a useful next actionParticipants ask what action makes sense if the balanced perspective is true.
Test and Update the Thinking
Full day only- Turn predictions into testable questionsParticipants take a recurring prediction such as “If I ask, they'll think I'm incompetent” and define what observable outcome would support or challenge it.
- Run a small real-world prediction checkWhere appropriate and low-risk, participants design a small action that tests the prediction.
- Update the thought with the new evidenceParticipants practice revising their interpretation after the real-world result rather than ignoring evidence that contradicts the original expectation.
- Know when restructuring is not the right toolParticipants identify situations where the problem requires direct workplace action, formal escalation or professional support rather than another thought exercise.
