About this session
Putting a person into an AI workflow does not automatically put that person in control. A reviewer may technically approve an AI recommendation while lacking the source information, expertise, time or organizational authority required to challenge it.
If most outputs are accepted, review can gradually become a routine click rather than a meaningful control.
Human-in-the-loop design therefore starts with the consequence of the workflow. Participants examine what the AI can influence, who could be affected, which errors would matter and whether an action is reversible.
They identify the points where human judgment genuinely changes the risk or quality of the outcome rather than inserting approval simply because a policy says a human must be present.
The session then develops the control itself. Participants decide what the reviewer needs to see, what they should check, what they are allowed to change and when they should stop or escalate the workflow.
They compare different control patterns including pre-action approval, exception review, sampling, secondary review and human takeover and consider where each one is appropriate.
Finally, participants test whether the control works in practice. They examine reviewer workload, automation bias, unusual cases, control bypass and changing AI behavior and design monitoring that can reveal when human oversight is becoming less effective.
The objective is not maximum human intervention. It is meaningful human control at the moments where human judgment and authority genuinely matter.
What your people take away
- Identify where AI-assisted workflows create consequences that justify stronger human control
- Choose the appropriate form and timing of human review rather than adding generic approval steps
- Give reviewers the evidence, context, time, expertise and authority required to intervene meaningfully
- Design clear escalation, override, stop and human-takeover paths for unusual or higher-risk situations
- Recognize automation bias, review fatigue and other conditions that can weaken human oversight
- Test and monitor whether human-in-the-loop controls continue to work as workflow volume and AI behavior change

What’s covered
Find Where Human Control Actually Matters
Every length- Map what the AI can influenceParticipants identify where AI generates information, makes recommendations, classifies cases, prioritizes work or triggers actions inside the workflow.
- Assess the consequenceParticipants examine severity, scale, reversibility, frequency, uncertainty and who may be affected if the AI-assisted step is wrong.
- Find the real judgment pointSome workflows place human review after the meaningful decision has effectively already been made.
- Decide whether human review adds valueA person should not be added to a workflow simply to create the appearance of oversight.
Design Review That Is Actually Meaningful
90 minutes and longer- Define what the human checksParticipants move beyond vague instructions such as 'review the AI output' and specify what the person should inspect.
- Show the reviewer the right evidenceA reviewer cannot challenge an AI output effectively if only the recommendation is visible.
- Match reviewers to the decisionParticipants assess whether the reviewer has the relevant domain expertise and understands the consequences of approving, changing or rejecting the output.
- Give the human real authorityParticipants define what the reviewer can do when something looks wrong.
Build Escalation, Exceptions & Override Into the Workflow
3 hours and longer- Design the normal control pathParticipants define what happens in a normal case: what the AI produces, what the human reviews, what approval means and what happens next.
- Define exception triggersParticipants identify conditions such as missing information, contradictory evidence, low confidence, unusual customer circumstances or higher-consequence cases that should leave the normal workflow.
- Create human takeoverSome situations require the automated or AI-assisted path to stop completely and return control to a person.
- Make override safe & traceableParticipants consider when a person may override an AI recommendation or automated result and what should be recorded when that occurs.
Test Whether Human Oversight Really Works
Full day only- Test the control — not just the AIParticipants test whether reviewers notice intentionally introduced errors, missing evidence, unusual cases or misleading recommendations.
- Watch for automation biasPeople can become more likely to accept AI recommendations when systems appear accurate most of the time.
- Watch for review fatigueHigh output volume can make careful review impossible.
- Monitor control effectiveness over timeAI systems, workflows and operating conditions change.
