About this session

Good communication is not only about choosing the right words. What people notice, assume, feel and communicate nonverbally can shape a conversation just as much as the message itself.

A technically clear statement can still land badly if timing, tone or emotional context are ignored.

This session helps participants apply emotional intelligence to everyday workplace relationships.

They learn how to notice their own emotional state before communicating, identify the assumptions they may be making about another person's intentions and pay closer attention to cues such as tone, behavior and context without pretending they can read somebody else's mind.

Participants then practice perspective-taking, clearer listening, adapting communication and handling moments where intention and impact do not match. The final module focuses on maintaining relationships over time through repair, appreciation, trust and clearer expectations.

The aim is not to avoid difficult conversations or make everybody agree. It is to communicate in a way that gives relationships a better chance of staying constructive when emotions are involved.

What your people take away

  • Recognize how your own emotions influence what you say, hear and assume
  • Use perspective-taking without pretending to know what another person is thinking
  • Listen for meaning, emotion and expectation rather than waiting to respond
  • Adapt communication when intention and impact do not match
  • Build stronger workplace relationships through trust, repair and clearer expectations

What’s covered

Start With Your Own Emotional Signal

Every length
  • Notice what you are bringing into the conversationParticipants identify the emotion present before an important interaction and consider how it may influence tone, speed, attention or interpretation.
  • Catch your reactive communication patternParticipants identify what they tend to do when frustrated, anxious or defensive, such as becoming abrupt, overexplaining, withdrawing or agreeing too quickly.
  • Separate feeling from factParticipants practice distinguishing 'I feel ignored' from the observable behavior that led to that conclusion.
  • Create enough space to choose your responseParticipants practice a short pause before communicating in higher-emotion moments and decide what outcome they actually want from the interaction.

Understand the Other Side More Accurately

90 minutes and longer
  • Listen for more than the wordsParticipants practice listening for the issue, emotion and expectation underneath what is being said rather than preparing their response while the other person speaks.
  • Use perspective-taking without mind-readingParticipants consider what pressures, information or priorities may be shaping another person's perspective while clearly separating possibility from fact.
  • Ask questions that close the gapParticipants practice questions that clarify meaning, concern and expectation, such as what matters most, what impact has been noticed or what outcome the other person is looking for.
  • Notice when your assumption is driving the relationshipParticipants identify recurring assumptions such as 'they don't respect me' or 'they always dismiss my ideas' and examine what evidence supports them.

Communicate With Greater Emotional Intelligence

3 hours and longer
  • Match the message to the momentParticipants examine how timing, privacy, channel and emotional intensity can change how the same message lands.
  • Be clear without adding unnecessary heatParticipants practice describing the observable issue, its impact and what they need next without accusation or vague hints.
  • Check intention against impactParticipants examine situations where they meant one thing but another person experienced something different.
  • Adapt without becoming inauthenticParticipants identify where another person may need more context, greater directness, more time or a different communication channel.

Build Relationships That Can Handle Friction

Full day only
  • Build trust through small repeated behaviorsParticipants identify the everyday behaviors that make relationships more dependable, such as following through, responding honestly, sharing relevant information and acknowledging contributions.
  • Use appreciation specificallyParticipants practice recognizing what another person actually did and why it mattered rather than relying on generic praise.
  • Repair misunderstandings earlyParticipants practice addressing small relationship strains before they become established stories about the other person.
  • Reset expectations when the pattern keeps repeatingParticipants identify relationships where the same misunderstanding or frustration occurs repeatedly and decide what expectation needs to become explicit.
